i'm looking for a fat filter... the low pass filter intrigues me and i want to do some medium and fat sounding synth sounds with this thing. the drive knob i assume increases the gain so it's making me gravitate towards this beast. how would you describe this thing? like i said, i really want to get my guitar sounding like an electronic synth.

it's either this or the lovetone meatball.

The Low Pass Filter on its own won't make your guitar sound like a synth. It does a lot of cool filter sounds, but it still sounds like a guitar into a filter. If you start adding other gear, such as a fuzz pedal, eBow, or volume pedal you start getting into more "synthy" sounds. One of my favorite things to do is a eBowed guitar into a square wave tremolo and then into the filter.

yea i should have elaborated more on that. i'm planning on getting an octave multiplexer from EHX to do the octaves and maybe a big muff for the fuzz, but will the filter be able to fatten my signal? or do i have to rely on another pedal to do that?

i wish there were more sound clips for this =(

OK, I hate to promote myself (yeah right!), but I can't resist. Go to http://music.download.com/hieronymous and go down to the last track, "Taurus VI" - it's a 6-string bass instead of guitar, but it's the MF-101 in action. There's fuzz through the filter at the end of the track too.

Also, go to http://www.myspace.com/hieronymous and on the track that comes up, "motorized mammoth," the second bass is the ZVex Woolly Mammoth fuzz through the MF-101, but I'm controlling the frequency with a CV pedal instead of the built-in envelope (actually, "Taurus VI" is both the envelope and CV pedal" - fuzz/distortion tends to flatten out dynamics anyway, so envelope isn't as effective...

I'm not sure about the Lovetone Meatball, but with the MF-101, you can control the filter with control voltage, whether it's a CV pedal or something else like a low-frequency oscillator or sample-and-hold or whatever. It requires more gear (and more $$$), but opens up a whole new world, unlike a traditional envelope filter. Again, I'm not aware if the Lovetone allows CV control or not. I've actually never beheld a Meatball in person - hard to find? Stick with Moog!

what does CV mean?

guys this is basically the sound i want to replicate, i am not sure if the moogerfooger can allow me to do this. ignore the cartoons, i just picked this out randomly =P

CV = Control Voltage (~ VC = Voltage Controlled). A basic example is that a LFO will send a CV signal to any paramaters on the 101 and work like a 3rd hand to "turn the knob."

so that would be an expression pedal?

You should be able get that sound(from the video). You will need a distortion pedal, which I'm shure you already have. I've played bass through it. It can go from subsonic stool softener to earpeircing screams, all while keeping a warm and phat sound. It is impossible for it to sound cold and sterile.

If I still had my 101 I would post some sound samples for you.

Sadly, I sold my MF 101 and 103 4 or 5 years ago I used the money to get Reaktor 3. Yea, it was a dumb idea, I should've just saved up for Reaktor. I'll have my foogers back sometime this summer.

what kind of distortion do you recommend? i have a dual rectifier but would i need something more fuzzy like a big muff or one of those little muffs (i've been eying one) also, would an EHX octave multiplexer help?

oh and just to clarify, we're talking about the filtered parts of the song, not the bass part right?

MF101, here i come!

I was talking about the synth part that has a kinda half cocked wah sound to it. Pretty much any distortion should do-fuzz, overdrive, distortion, whatever.... It all depends on the type of pickups your guitar has, the settings on your tone and volume controls, and how you actually play. Try the distortion you got now first, and make shure you try it both before and after the filter. The octave pedal will deffiniately give you a synth-like tone. Try all set up combos, you know like guitar>distortion>octave>filter or maybe gutiar>filter>distortion>octave. Good luck!
