Is there a fast way to switch between
1. using a voyager preset
2. "real panel parameters" mode, where it uses the actual settings on the unit
reading the manual it appears you need to dive thru some menu options. it would be nice to just hit a button
thanks!

Yes, in version 3.6 you can program the CURSOR button with the "real panel parameters" function.
Here you can get the latest 3.6 versions:

for posterity, you need to do 2 things to get this to work, after updating to the new 3.6 ( 2017 version )
1. go to "master menu" find "cursor button" and set it to "007 real panel parameters"
2. go to "edit" and find "preset cursor", then set "preset cursor mode global cursor" to ON
otherwise the "cursor button --> real panel parameters" will only work for whatever patch you have selected
took a while to figure that out, but now it works great! very easy to switch between realtime panel controls, and saved patches
thanks again, Rudi!
