I love my Rogue

Despite the scaling problems and scratchy filter sliders! Anyway, I've been working on a tune and put some Rogue on it - first time I've pulled out the synth in months!

The tune is called "Next to Last," at least for now. Drums recorded during a jam last summer, Tune 8-string bass and reissue Mustang Bass added during the past week or so. Everything, including the Moog, was recorded through an Electro-Harmonix Black Finger compressor and Alembic F2-B preamp. The 8-string bass has Roland Space Echo on it, the Moog tracks are MF-104. One of the Rogue tracks (left speaker?) I just used the filter on the synth, while the other one is through my MF-101.

So here it is: "next to last" (for the latest mix, see below)

This is just a rough mix - any suggestions would be appreciated! Synth too loud? Not loud enough? Is the entire track too quiet?

I should point out that this isn't the entire thing - the final has another couple of minutes - gonna try and work on that tomorrow!

Thanks for listening!!! 8)

I like it, reminds me of some of David Sylvian's stuff which is no bad thing (in my opinion).

It's a great chill-out track 8) I think the whole track is a bit too quiet. The synth could be a little louder... I'm a bit more predisposed to hearing a synth over other instruments. Besides the fact that I have a Rogue ;) Though I do love acoustic instruments being mixed with electronic ones.

Sounds cool, great bass line. The rogue is one of those synths that I probably read every single review or article that exists on line but never actually found any sound files for. Do you have any other things recorded with the rogue, even just noodling around with it? I'd sure like to hear it or if you know of anywhere else that has some examples of it.

Thanks all! I'm pretty happy with how this track is turning out, though I'm having trouble with the next section. Gonna sit on it for a while and work on other (non-music) stuff that has to get done!

In the meantime, I tweaked the synth volume levels just a bit, and jacked up the overall track volume. I replaced the link in my original post, but just in case, here it is again:

"next to last - fragment 3" (sorry, took the link down - go to most recent posts below for most recent version)

Ezzo - You can hear it on the tracks "in memoriam" and "corridor" at my electronymous page. In fact, you can see a picture of it there too! 8)

Thanks Heiro those sound really cool. I've always wondered how that overdrive feature on the rogue sounded.

Actually, I don't think you're hearing the overdrive. I've never really noticed any significant difference with the overdrive - I usually run the filters just below the overdrive level. It does, however, have a square-wave option in the oscillator section. Also, at least on "corridor" I'm running it through some Moogerfoogers, and may have been running it hot there.

Well, in the midst of all this new synth madness, let us hark back to a sadder time when analog was on its way out. I've pretty much finished the song - here's a rough mix:

next to last - even newer mix than before (but, in hindsight, not the last one)

Again, any comments on mix, etc. are much appreciated! I'm planning on redoing the keyboard solo - the one here took me like 30 tries and I finally got tired - I definitely think I can do better, and I've had a day to both listen to it and get away from it.

It was an interesting experience - it was difficult tweaking the various parameters as I was playing, though I got better as I got along. The hardest was using the mod wheel to affect the oscillator, and then wanting to adjust the speed at the same time!

EDIT: this is the latest version. new synth solo. when I did the pitchblend, I was actually reaching for the modulation rate! I think I have a couple of more things to tweak, but I'm gonna sit with this one for a while...

another mix!!!

next to last (no more link)

nothing to do with "little phatty"!!!

next to last (link gone)

I heard it at during my internship at universal last summer!

next to last (where'd it go???)

but seriously...

next to last (check it out here!)

(all the links are to the same file. comments on mix, sound, etc. appreciated!!!)

(sorry about the universal joke - I know that spam is a serious topic)

(and actually, I've changed the link again! this is the last one, I swear! 8) )

(OK, guess what, I changed the link again. I keep hearing stuff that needs to be changed. But I think that this will really be the last one. And if you believe that...)

(not hosting it myself anymore, but you can hear it at my myspace page.)

H... I keep wondering if the latest version of this song is going to be the "next to last" one! :D

I like the fourth version the best I think. Everything sounds like it's mixed just right. The Rogue is louder, but not domineering. A great funky song! Love the "second" ending too :)
