VX-351 setup

Hi Voyager owners,

Just woundering how you guys setup your VX-351 to work easily with your voyger.

At the moment I have my voyager setup on a desk with a shelf above it holding another synth. I find it very difficult to connect the cables from the back of the voyager to the VX-351 to experiment.

Should I be connecting cables from the back of the voyager to a patchbay instead? Then I can patch from the patchbay to the VX-351 without obstruction.

Is this how some of you here have it setup? Which patchbay should I be looking at? Is the best way to go about the problem?

Thank you

A patchbay is probably the best solution, IMO. As you've discovered, the placement of the CV jacks on the Voyager's back panel is less than optimum for those of us who experiment with CV connections, or use the Voyager's Mix/Out loop. A patchbay would bring all the connections to the front for better access.

If you decide to use a patchbay, be sure to get one that supports TRS connections. All of the Voyager's Red CV jacks are TRS types, meaning that they supply 5V for expression pedals, and you don't want to short these out with standard 1/4" jacks (it won't harm anything if you do, but you won't be able to use expression pedals). This also means that you'll need TRS patch cords between the Voyager and patchbay.

Regarding patchbays, expect to spend about $100 for a decent one. Get one that's completely enclosed to help keep the dust out. Also, most PBs are configured 'normalled' out of the box, meaning that each jack in the top row is connected to the corresponding jack in the bottom row. To support the Voyager's CV connections, you'll want to reconfigure the PB so that each jack is completely separate from every other jack. Refer to the PB instructions on how to do this.

joam,

If you look at the pictures of my setup on the Squarewave site, you'll see what Greg is talking about. I recommend rack mounting the 351 and the patchbays.
