RME Insert and Normalled Patchbay

Hi all,
I'm racking my RME and want access to the Mix-Out Loop. If I connect a standard insert cable from the RME's "Mixer Out / Filter In" port to a normalled, balanced (TRS) patchbay, will everything work okay? That is, will the insert cable and patchbay function as a loopback when no outboard devices are connected at the patchbay? And is it okay if the send or return to/from the outboard device are otherwise balanced? I presume that the TS plugs bridge the appropriate signals together but am not positive.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Dave
