The "mix out/filter in" jack on an XL

I don't quite understand the Voyager XL user manual explanation of this function. With a single cable plugged into that jack, you can take the mix out of the XL, send it to a Moogerfooger, for example, and have the resulting effects mix sent back to the XL to complete its journey through the filter? All through a single cable? Am I reading that correctly? If so, what single input on the Moogerfooger should be used to achieve such magic? Or if I am misunderstanding, what does that XL jack really accomplish instead?

You need to use an insert cable. That's a cable with a stereo plug (TRS) on one end and two mono plugs (TS) on the other end. The stereo plug goes to the Voyager and the other two cables go to the Moogerfooger. One TS cable goes to the input and the other TS cable connects to the output on the Moogerfooger. It does make a difference which one goes to the output and which one goes to the input - if it doesn't work, switch the two TS cables around. Hope that helps.

ahhh. That explains it. I didn't know what an "insert cable" is. The diagram in the manual makes a lot more sense now too. Thanks. So, to take this one step further, though, I assume that if I have three Foogers linked together, I would just put one of the insert cable's TS plugs to the input of Fooger one, and the other TS plug into the ouput of Fooger three?

Yea, that's correct. You may find that some Moogerfoogers work better than others. I like using the FreqBox in the mix out/filter in jack. I also have the Oscillator out from the FreqBox connected to the external input of the RME. This allows me to "drone" the FreqBox oscillator at a specific pitch while I play the RME oscillators around it. Pretty limited, but pretty cool as well.
Have fun trying out different possibilities!

I've always been able to get by with 3 feet, so I haven't tried longer lengths. I think I'd probably move stuff around in my studio to accommodate a shorter length cable before investing in a thirteen foot insert cable.
If it is a straight TRS to TRS cable I'm pretty sure thirteen feet is fine.
