Is there a way to get rid of the LFO's dependence on the modwheel? I'm using a Roland keyboard as a controller and the way Roland implements the modwheel is useless for LFO control.

Yes, kind of.

If you press and hold the Amount button, it will flash and while flashing, the mod knob acts as a mod wheel. The rub is that if you touch the MIDI mod wheel it takes priority over it and, as you switch presets, the "MOD amount" kicks in to where you had it last. A re-boot of the SP is the only way I've found to make that behavior go away.

I'm with you though, I use an Oberheim Matrix-6 to control my SP and it's got the lousy spring return lever for mod which is kind of useless for anything other than vibrato type effects - which I almost never use.
