Switch to next/previous preset via Midi

Hi everybody,

I have this question related to the Midi implementation of the Voyager: Is it possible to switch to the next or previous preset via Midi? I know I can choose a specific preset via program change, but I want to achieve something different.

Example: I would like to use a 2-switch-midi-pedal, and switch to the next preset with one switch and to the previous preset with the other switch. Is that possible?

Cheers
Dirk

There is no such command as one step to the next program in the MIDI standards. There only absolute preset numbers, no relative things like "next" or "lower".
So Moog would have to implement something to give this feature you. But this would not be able to to on MIDI CCs, as they are all taken (aren't they?). So it would have to some sysex string. But this wouldn't be that easy to trigger on a footswitch, as there are not many, if at all, footswitches that are able to send out sysex data you programmed.
So I think this feature will not happen.

Are there synth known with a MIDI implementation of going to the next preset on a certain command?
There used to be some synth, like the Memorymoog (if my memory doesn't fail me on this), that used to have a footswitch input to step through the preset in one direction.

The Memorymoog does have program sequencing. You can specify up to (x) sets of ten user defined patches each which can be advanced/reversed from either the front panel or with footswitches.

But the Voyager does not have that feature.

Few analog synths have that feature at all. Quite handy for performances.

Hi till,

A lot of the Kurzweil K and PC-series could do this as their controller mapping is quite profound.

Some other workstations can also be tricked into this by sending the MIDI CC# they've chosen for Data INC / Data DEC.

The one thing you have to make sure of is that the display screen is left on a main page such that pressing either of the hardware Data INC / Data DEC buttons would change presets. Then you could also do it via those MIDI CC#s for Data INC / Data DEC.

Hi Dirk,

Something like a MIDI Moose, Gecko MIDI Switcher, or Tech 21 MIDI Mouse would sort of do the trick (once you foot-tapped your starting preset #). Once you were at the first preset you wanted to increment from, you could then just use their UP / DOWN footswitches:

That would be exactly what I need... I wasn´t aware of the Gecko, b.t.w. It looks cool! I will give those boxes a try :-)
