Hey guys!

I just got my vx-351 in the mail and I'm patching to my heart's content. I have found almost no information or tutorials on how to get the most of of it, anybody have any tips or tricks in it's implementation?

Check the back of the Voyager User Manual. There's a section dedicated to the VX-351 that includes an introduction to the device, complete descriptions of all of the jacks, and examples of some of the things you can do with it. After that, you might take a look at the KnobTweak site for more ideas. For example, try out the LFO Wave Warping trick, found here:

I'm not sure how many cv options are available on the Prodigy or Liberation, but there is a lot that you can do with it if you get really creative.

Colorform might chime in with some results of experiments he has done using the VX with programmable mod destinations.

The 351 is kind of a disappointment if you are new to the world of patching, see a box full of patch points, imagine that you'll soon be creating a whole gaggle of modular bleeps and bloops, and then realize that it kinda just gives you what pot mapping would, but with cables

But the magic of the 351 for me comes with using it to make all presets have a similar characteristic, for instance, I find that setting aftertouch to sweep the filter cutoff on every patch is pretty nice. Overall, I think it's basically for when you want to use your voyager to control other CV equipment.

A few weeks ago I got my very first Voyager (the RME rack version) along with the VX-351 and VX-352 CV Input Expander {for RME only}.

I'll use other posts to elaborate on the exquisite differences between the Voyager line and the Phatty line, but my primary driving force for getting the Voyager (even though I have a Little Phatty, Sub Phatty, and a Sub 37) was to get those patch points.

Like you, I always anticipate a Moog purchase with dreams of sugar plums dancing in my head.

After the initial rush, I then go into the Peggy Lee version of "Is That All There Is?"

But then, new ideas and uses start popping up over time until I get to the point that I can't remember not needing this new device.

Although it's a bit easier to see and wire up a VX-351 and VX-352 as they're right next to each other, start taking CV Outs from the VX-351, modify them with external devices, and then bring them back to the Voyager's CV Ins, in every combination you can think of. With careful use of Attenuation, you can create things that are just on the edge of insanity.

I hate to tell you that buying more stuff is a solution but... A CP-251 will help take you straight into bloop and bleep land, as will any {all} Moogerfoogers and minifoogers.

Which raises the question… As a relatively new voyager owner myself (EB), what would be your first purchase? The VX 351, CP 251, or do you think they should come as a pair?

The qualifier would be:
Are you going to primarily modulate something in the Voyager from some other device?
(CP-251)

or

Are you going to use the Voyager to modulate something else?
(VX-351)

or

Are you going to re-wire the Voyager to itself?
(VX-351)

Having both the VX-351 and CP-251 together will serve all of the above better, but those are my single choices.

I'd love to hear some of your ideas for patches involving the VX-351, Voyager, and CP-251, and any and all MoogerFoogers and Mini's.

I started with an MF-101 and a CP-251. Later I added an EB and a VX-351. I say get them together and rack mount them. The internal powering scheme caused hum problems for me so I use the wallwart via the input on the back of the unit to power the CP. It took 10 years but now I am up to 8 MoogerFoogers, EB, a T3, and fixing to dive into modular sequencing and eventually a full-blown modular rig.

This stuff is like crack!
