CV out and Freqbox oscillator

As a newbie, I don't fully understand the world of CV out, especially since my sub 37 doesn't have it. I have seen discussions of using a Freqbox as a third oscillator via CV out, but not for a Sub 37. If you ran the audio out from a Sub 37 through the Freqbox, though, it seems like you still would be getting at least some sonic semblance of a third oscillator, wouldn't you? What 3rd oscillator element would be missing without the CV out part of the puzzle? Is it purely an operational issue, or is there a sonic component as well?

Hi slick,
Basically you can use FreqBox in 3 different ways:
- As a drone (like a pedal note).
- In sync. The way you described above. The FreqBox tracks the Audio Input.
- As a real oscillator. Using the Frequency CV Input and the Oscillator Output jacks from the pedal. In my case I use the Moog Multi-Pedal for converting the MIDI notes to CV. After that, you have to attenuate the Oscillator Output from the pedal because is too hot.

So are you suggesting that via the Sub 37 midi output, the pedal can make some sort of conversion and supply the equivalent function as CV outputs for a sub 37? Such that if you route synth to pedal to Freqbox you have a 3rd oscillator? Also, for your #2 and #3 Freqbox uses, does #2 provide any less "3rd oscillator" benefits than #3?

Hi slick,
There are so many ways to do something in synthesis. Here is one simple solution.
Given that MIDI is the sole outgoing source of control on a Sub 37/Sub Phatty,
the easiest way to have an external oscillator follow its keyboard is via something
that's already designed with a MIDI In.
Here is one such example:

It might even be possible to mount/power/play this inside the Sub 37 chassis, or velcro'd on the back somewhere.
But, pretty much any synth (mono or poly, analog or digital, virtual or hardware) with a MIDI In should be experimented with by running it through the Sub's EXT IN.
I've yet to be disappointed with any of the results.
