Any reason why this would not work to in effect multiply the available presets by hundreds? Mono out from the motif to line level audio in on sub 37? It seems like that combination would function as if the motif is part of the s37's on board factory presets and that this would be a killer combination. I am new to the synth world, though, and want to be sure I am not misunderstanding something. My sub 37 is less than 1 week old. It's obviously not like I am bored with the existing presets already, but I am a gadget freak who believes more is always better.

You can do that but I would not look at it as adding presets. It's more like adding a complex digital oscillator to the Sub 37. You could also go the other way and route the Sub 37 output to the Motif and use it as an effects processor.

The more I think about this from a workflow perspective, it seems that for this to work, I also would have to connect midi out from the sub 37 to midi in on the motif. The sub 37 then would be the keyboard for the motif, and the motif would generate the sound which then would be audio out from the matrix, through the sub 37 audio input, and processed through all of the sub 37 capabilities. Seems like this combines the best of both worlds? So back to my original question - good idea, bad idea, reason why it won't work, something I am missing, best concept in synth history??

welcome to the fascinating world of monophonic analog synthesizers.

You can also connect the Motif MIDI-out with the Sub37 MIDI-in and play on the Motif-keyboard. BUT, you don´t have to forget, that the Sub37 is an monophonic synth with just one voice. So if you play for example a 3-voice-chord-sound on your Motif, the Audiosignal of this went into the ONE filter of the Moog (with it´s ONE envelope-generator) and further through the ONE amplifier of the Moog (with it´s ONE envelope-generator). No problem, if you press all three keys simultaneously. But if you play the three notes one behind the other and then holding the keys, the filter- and amp-envelopes of the Moog starts with every new pressed key of the Keyboard. That´s the limitation you have with a monophonic synth.

It's a great idea and it will work fine. Remember, there is more than one good way to connect two synths. Experiment and go with whatever works out best for you.

It'll work just fine. I just bought a MeeBlip Module to add a few extra oscillators to the Sub and it sounds great. Fat City! Now if only Moog made a midi controlled single Osc in a box...

I 'll be trying something like this tonight at band practice, running Sub37 MIDI Out into a Roland DR-330 sound module. Then sending the Roland audio back through the Sub37. Main benefit is the ability to filter-sweep using the EP-3, and they will share the delay/effects chain. Sounds great here at home, and probably will at practice.

Oh yeah, and I set-up patch just for this purpose, with LFOs going after the filter at different speeds, so I can get fast/slow rotation effects by turning some dials.

That's why I was assuming that the sub should be the controller and the motif just a tone generator - right?

That is a great configuration and that may be the configuration that will work for you and it is certainly a good one. But as I said before, keep experimenting and you will find the way that works best.

I have added other variables ... A third board as a midi controller driving a Sub Phatty and a Sub 37. The Sub Phatty audio fed into the Sub 37. There are many possibilities. Try them all.
