Tempo control from external keyboard

I seem to be able to control the Arp on the Sub 37 only when in Patter / SE mode. With Sync Tap selcted of course.
Is that correct or should I be able to do this in any Pattern mode.
The manual does not mention this requirement so perhaps it ought to if this is the case?
