Hi there, im trying to find out how the "modified mix in out loop" from the "kicking it up a notch" document works. I can't figure out which cables to buy to do this.
I know it starts with an insert cable (stereo to two mono jack, right?). Then how does the 'y adapter' work? Is is a female stereo(trs) to two female mono(ts/rs) connection? Or mono female(ts) to mono female(ts). And where goes what? I assume the patch cable mentioned is just a mono cable(?). Please help me out which cables I should get (or make if they can't be bought standard). Or can someone provide me with a detailed signal flow.

It is rather simple, and very well explained in that document... You have several options. I suppose the one you're talking about is the one on Fig 3 ?
It is simply a cable made up of a TRS (stereo) connected to the MIX OUT that goes to split TS (mono) connectors. One will be the SEND signal, and the other one the RECEIVE signal.

A 1/4" stereo to two mono 1/4" cable will do.

EDIT: If it's the one on fig 4, then it is that same cable, with the TIP side going to a MONO Y (all FEMALE type, shown below), and one of its output going back to the RING side of the first cable, and the other going to a 1/4" patch cord to the EXT IN.

I see, so the mono y just is just a mono connector split in two identical mono connections. I thought this was the case but was unsure, since I could not find this adapter anywhere. Only Stereo to 2x mono and never female on both sides. Where did you find this pic, I could not find one in stores (Netherlands, but anywhere in Europe would be fine).

I agree the second cable (mono female at all ends) is not typical, but it can be found (the picture comes from the web randomly). At best, you can build your own using 3X 1/4" female plug, and two short shielded wires ? It would probably be even cheaper then buying a ready made one.

I guess making them myself is the best way to go then.
Btw, found your image and that one is stereo on one side too.

It all depends on the input impedance of the destinations. Usually, line inputs are relatively high impedance and will lower the signal level only very slightly. But, yes, there is a small loss of signal amplitude by splitting.

P.S. Sorry about the stereo to two mono all female cable picture, I thought it was all mono. But anyway, you get the idea...

I ordered 2 of these:

Mono to mono.
Together with a normal insert, y split and patch cable should do the trick I guess.
