Update problem

I tried to update the LP stage 1 to version 3.1 – build 671 using the downloaded software.
The LP is stuck at "RX FIRMWARE STAGE 2" and will not progress.
The LP_Stage_v2-v3_Update.exe dos program runs very quickly sends the sysex immediately - 150977 bytes then says exit.
Basically I can't get the bootloader into the LP over midi, no usb on my LP.
What do I do?
Is the sysex being sent too fast? Is it possible to send the bootloader slower?
