Steve Winwood Minimoog-Sounds

One of the best leads in my opinion is found on the song "My love is leaving". Does anybody know the setting? I think he used an old Minimoog.

The ones that I've always liked include "While You See a Chance," "The Finer Things" and "Valerie" (both recorded versions). I think he uses a single-osc. with a sawtooth wave selection on the 2nd and 3rd songs. On "While You See a Chance," he appears to be using two oscillators, both set to produce square waves. The LFO always seems to be on triangle wave on all three songs.

I'm always amazed at how many different things can be accomplished with just that synth. For a long time though, I thought Winwood was using an ARP Odyssey with PPC controllers. (I found that I was able to re-create the "Valerie" lead sound using my old Axxe. But, I guess it wasn't that simple.)

Yes, i like "Valerie", "While you see a chance"(Multimoog), Finer Things very much too, but one of the most musical Minimoog-Lead setting is found on the record "Back in the high life" on the song "My love's leaving". It is so warm and sweet and sonic, unbelieveable. If you haven't heard it get it and you won't believe your ears. If someone knows how it's done, please post it on this forum. Steve's is surly one of the best Mini Players in Pop-Music.

Steve's Minimoogs were both modified by Studio Electronics with a control for pitch bend range and LFO rate. The settings broadly speaking were:
Osc Mod=ON
Osc1: 8' Pulse wave (Fully clockwise pos.) Level=8
Osc2: 8' Pulse wave (Fully clockwise pos.) Level=8
Osc3: 2' Triangle Wave, Level=6
Filter Mod=OFF
Keybd Contr 1+2+OFF
Filter:
Cutoff Freq -5
Emphasis 0
Contour 5
Attack 0
Decay 1
Sustain 7.5
Loudness:
Attack 0
Decay 10
Sustain 10
He quickly ditched the Moogs in favour of a couple of rack mounted Midimoogs made by Studio Electronics.
The only keyboard he'll bother with these days is the Hammond! Check out his latest album "About Time" with Jose Neto on guitar and Walfredo Reyes on percussion. A work of genius produced by the versatile George Shilling, the Sundae Club producer!.

I read once in 2001 that Steve's vocal pitch has lowered considerably over the last twenty years. Is that sho?

Steve played those tunes on a "Multi-Moog." I wouldn't mind having one of those in my collection. TZ
