I heard about The Album Leaf 2 years ago when I bought a new truck that had a nice sound system and a buddy of mine said "I've got the perfect CD to break it in" it happened to be The Album Leaf

Well a few weeks ago a friend of mine who is also a TAL friend told me they were playing at Howie & Sons Pizza.

I was confused, album leaf isn't a huge band or anything but how they got booked at a small pizza parlor with no stage and their PA that consists of two JBL SRX715's a 16 channel mixer and tables for speaker stands I have no idea. In order to go to the bathroom you had to walk behind the guy playing guitar...he literally stood 3 feet in front of the bathroom doors.

Anyway, I've been to a lot of concerts in my time, from Bjork to Dream Theater to Ottmar Liebert. This show was in the top 3 of my life, maybe even top 2.

sorry they suck so bad but I couldn't up the exposure on my camera enough to get a non-blurry pictures without using the flash since I would just end up getting bumped by someone in the crowd

Well, you might not think much of your own photos, but I could identify how you positioned the Fender Rhodes and the MicroKorg in relation to the Minimoog.. That's essentially how I would do it.

Hmm interesting. I'm a fan of Album Leaf myself (nothing like you are). I've only bought 'one day I'll be on time'. I guess the sound quality of the video did not do them justice. I could not really get an idea of what was going on there in the video. Actually, I am not terribly fond of the cd I bought. Still, AL is cool. I enjoy 'Asleep' and 'Last Time Here'. I could never put them in the same category as Bjork.

I did pick up a cd by a band called Tristeza (sp?) that same day. I must say, both of those cd's are somewhat similar in style and I only like 4ish songs between both the cd's!

Really cool post. Thanks for the pictures and it's great that you enjoyed the show as much as you did and were able to see them in such close quarters. I think my favorite shows are probably smaller venues too.

Yeah Jimmy Levelle was in Tristeza as well. Great musician.

The video sounds horrible I was about 5 feet away from the main PA speaker so it was distorting...I honestly thought they sounded better live mainly because the drums were big live unlike on the cd where the sound like they were just mic'd with overheads.

Anyway One Day I'll Be On Time is a great album but I picked up two new cd's at the show and they are much better, at least as far as full songs go...there is more production done on In A Safe Place

Bjork was awesome live but I actually got a little bored at that show and I am a huge fan, that show sounded great but it was not personable at all the only thing she said during the whole show was

"Ththththankkkk yyyyyoou" and "grgrgrgracias" (think icelandic)

EDIT I forgot to add, while the other bands were playing the album leaf was just hanging out at the pizza place, I literally bumped into each one of the band members at some point and after the show I just walked up and said great job and stuff.

Haha cool. Well, I believe AL was here in Tucson not too long ago. I did not even know it until after they had left. I was bummed that I missed them. Same thing happened with Mogwai

So, was the Leaf getting freak with that AE? What kinda stuff were they doing with it mostly? Effects, soundscapes and stuff?

To be honest with you there were points of the show where I really couldn't figure out who was doing what. I think there was one point where the guitarist was doing guitar stuff and stuff on the keyboard, while the drummer stood up to play the voyager, the violin guy was playing the mini moog and Jimmy was playing his Rhodes

I think for the most part though Jimmy would start a song on his powerbook that had percussive synth related stuff programmed while playing his rhodes, the guitarist would switch back between guitar and keyboards and then of course the drummer on drums and the violinist on violin or the mini moog

i have to say that the video was not good it is painful hard to listhen to didn't what the hell was going on.And i'am a big fan this music didn't serve them well

as I said in the first post about the pictures "most of them suck cause it was so dark"

I recorded this in a room with almost no light with a $350 digital camera, it's a bootleg so bitching about quality need not apply
