Recording from animoog iPad to iMac DAW?

Seems that all the gadgets and docks out there are made to get audio into the iPad. I'd love to be able to record my real time playing on animoog through a line out from iPad to my iMac via my Focusrite audio interface. Does anyone know if the iPad earphone output would work for that (with a cable to a 1/4 inch jack for the interface)? Or is there an iPad dock that has a line out that would do the job? The previous post on getting audio in and out of IO devices seemed to focus more on "in" than "out". Recording from Animoog to a DAW was suggested as a solution to the absence of real recording capacity in the Animoog itself. That makes great sense -- iPad/animoog as instrument. Thanks for any and all tips and suggestions. Animoog Forever!

I use an Alessis io dock... It' works very well and I am happy with it. I think there may be a new version out soon so you may want to wait a bit, I would suggest you check out the Alessis web site.

ioDock rocks my socks. I use the audio out to record high-quality into my computer audio interface (I think the audio from the dock sounds way better than what you get from the headphone out) -- and I use the ioDock video output to stream netflix from my ipad to the TV in the bedroom. It all works a treat.

So, Amos, have you recorded the Animoog in real time through the IO Dock outputs? What sort of line in do you plug into on your audio interface -- and which interface do you use? On my focusrite interface i have two combo XLR/instrument inputs as well as midi. Thanks for responding!

I use an RME Multiface. It has 8 balanced 1/4" line inputs, so I use two of those.
I don't know if the line outs on the dock are balanced; I've been using mono instrument cables anyway so it wouldn't matter. I'm sure you'd be fine using two instrument cables from the dock line outs to the focusrite combi inputs.
The dock also has combi input jacks but sadly not so for the outputs. xlr outputs would be *really* swank, but they were designing to a price point after all, and an amazing job they did of it in my opinion...
I've recorded animoog both realtime playing from the keys and realtime response to MIDI from my DAW. In fact you can just set up Animoog as an External Instrument in Live; if you have a low-latency sound card then you are good to go. Treat it like a VST instrument that just has a bit of latency...
this is animoog recorded into a DAW from ages ago when it was still a prototype...

I believe they are.

Thanks so much, Amos. An IO dock is definitely on my shopping list now. And really enjoyed the improv from "ages ago!"

Is there a less expensive alternative? I assume audio out through the headphone jack is not the best option. What about the Apple iPad dock? or iRig? I think the camera connection kit transfers audio through it. Is there a viable option using audio out through USB? Its all so confusing. I really want to get my Animoog audio out to my audio interface and preserve as much quality but would rather not spring for the Alesis IO Dock...
thanks for any advice here,
Greg
