Specifically, the O with the thing in the middle, looks like maybe a flag, or maybe a part of a sixteenth note or something. Maybe a symbol from a schematic diagram.

Has that always been part of the brand? Does it have any kind of meaning, or is it just another corporate logo?

I think this is it.

I think it's a pitch fork in the shape of a note. I think it dates back to 1972, when R. A. Moog became Moog Music. Who designed it? I don't know.

Actually, it has been used since the R.A. Moog days, prior to 1972. The first modules had the logo, and I believe the theremin ads in Electronics World prior to the modules used the same 16th note in an O logo.

EDIT: a quick search on Moog Archives shows theremins from 1960 with the logo.

But the name Moog, with that O in it, wasn't used in the days of R. A. Moog, was it ?

Yes, but it was later in that company. Remember, R.A. Moog lasted until 1972. The earliest modules, other than the prototypes, were made in 1968, and featured the 16th note O logo.

Edit- The MOOG with the 16th note O first appeared in 1972.

I always thought the thing inside the "o" was two keys. That's probably not right, but that's what I see when I look at it.

Actually the 'Ultra short form catalog' included the logo with "R. A. Moog Co." and the Trumansburg address and was published in October, 1965 so the logo goes back at least that far.

The catalog depicted the 901, 901-A and 901-B oscillators for $195, $85, and $125 respectively (cheaper than the synthesizer.com gear that Voltor is about to buy!).

I have a very clean image of the catalog that I won't give you because it is part of a set of copyrighted material that I purchased. : )

As soon a Marc sees this thread, I'm sure he'll have a better answer.

Not when you adjust for inflation. $195 was a ton of money back when the average price of a new car was $2650.

The Moog logo got its start in 1964, for the ten year anniversary of R. A. Moog. It is described in both of the 1964 R.A. Moog catalogs... especially the one where the first modules were mentioned after AES.

The parts inside the o are notes. The surrounding o "creates unity and movement."

Sure, if you invert the stem it would look more like a conventional 16th note flag. The fact that the stem and flag are "inside" the note rather than outside is a statement that music as we know it and the way sound is made is about to be reinvented, and wouldn't you bet, that's exactly what Moog and other Electronic Music pioneers proceeded to successfully do.

You can also abstract that the ring is a patch point and the stem inside the ring is the contact with which your patch chord makes a connection.

Actually, David Van Koevering's "Isle Of Electronicus" "sign" - which I now own - has the same logo... and was used in the late sixties/early seventies..!? Here are a few pics...
