LP vs. SP ...which is PHATTER???

Well, Xmas came early this year and I just got a new Slim Phatty. Ive owned an original Little Phatty for a few years and really love it.
Upon playing around with the Slim though, I hate to say it, but it does sound PHATTER to my ears. Im kinda sad, because I feel like my LP is now the old, aging champ in the corner of the ring who just got knocked out.
Can someone tell me if im just hearing things? Did Moog actually make any major or minor improvements to the sound engine of the Slim Phatty?

BTW, is the LP editor / librarian compatible with the Slim Phatty?

I have heard other owners say that the SP is "phatter" (

) than the LP. To me they sound the same but I have not had any chance to do a side to side test.

The grass is always greener...
They are the same. Although they have different factory presets, so if you were sampling the SP presets, perhaps you just like them better than the LP's.
And the sound editor works with the SP just as is does with the LP – that is to say not very well in my experience.

The overall difference between the sound of a stage and a slim is about as different as from one stage to another.
Yes, there were some changes. Did you have a stage or a stage 2? I believe the change happened in between the stage 1 and 2. I could be totally wrong on that though. If an old phatty is sent in for the firmware upgrade and sonic tune-up, the sonic tune up includes new caps in the d/a section and a few other things, but mostly the caps.
Here is a thread with user experiences:

Hey there,
I own both a Little Phatty Stage II and 2 Slim Phattys. I can't really tell which is phatter, as to me they both sound too similar.
Regarding the LP Editor/Librarian, I have used the it to save patches from the Slim Phattys so it seems compatible enough, I just ran the editor with it thinking there was a Little Phatty Stage II hooked up - when really it was a Slim Phatty (I'm referring to a menu up the top of the editor where you choose your Little Phatty model) and I don't recall any problems.
Thanks,
David Smyth

I own a LP tribute and did own a SP. I thought the SP was very thin sounding compared to the LP.

Im using the original LP Stage 1. Im very interested in the "sonic tune up" thing. I did something similar with a Micromoog a while back; adding a cap in parallel for increase bass response. However, I tend to stay away from modding the SMT stuff.
Speaking of mods, check out my modded LP. I added 2 BOSS pedals inside, DD-6 delay and PS-5 pitch shifter. Was able to mount the jacks on the side and get the controls in the modwheel section. Removing the gold shorting plug allows access to the original LP mono dry out signal. Enjoy!

I wonder if Moog would share any service notes on the "sonic tune-up" for the DIY'er?

Sometime they do share info like that, but almost always through direct contact and not for public release. If you are considering it, I'd contact them by phone or email.

I think the sounds of the Litty Phatty Stage II are phatter. Before I bought the SP I tried the LP II, special ed. I liked it but of the size I bought the SP. In the shop they didn´t told me that the sounds are different. When I came home and tried the SP I was disappointed

I liked the sounds of the Little Phatty stage II much better. There are a couple of basses, wow phatt and low

As I´m a beginner in analog Moog land I like to learn from the presets. So now I´m looking for the Sounds that are in the Little Phatty stage II, special edition to use in my Slim Phatty.
