i'm i a complete moron if i buy an mp-201 even though it's been discontinued? does that mean the upgrade is no longer available? if a problem arises with a discontinued product,does that mean you're sol?

No, Moog will service their products. THey will still work on Theremin's produced by Big Briar back in 1993 or so.
Now as far as looking forward to new OS upgrades, I have no idea.
From what I have observed, they discontinue something for a reason and then make something new to replace it.
