Fellow moog users i hope you are doing great

i have two questions im about to get or a dark energy or an evolver from dave smith to join to my moog is possible or only with the dark energy?

with another dark energy i would have 1 more osc? 1 more lfo? syncable?

with the evolver you think i can use its features on the moog? like the extra lfo and extra osc?

I don't know much about the Dark Energy... but there's many ways you can use the synths in conjunction. The LP has only got CV in, so you could use CV to control it in various ways, but I'm not sure what the DA offers.

They are both MIDI however, and this opens up a large number of possibilities. The first thing I'd be trying is simply to send MIDI out to the DA, from the LP, and see how fat I can get a mono sound , probably doubling the octave. I know it'll sound sweet without even trying it .

The LP has external audio in, which passes through its filter section. That'd be worth fiddling with. The DA also has external audio in too.

The fact is there's tonnes of different ways you could get these two beasts working in conjunction. The only thing I'm not sure you could do is to have duo-phonic; although the LP allows this feature I'm not sure you can assign the DA in that way.

The best thing to do is listen closely to both synths, work out specifically how they sound different, then use these differences to allow them to compliment each other.

I assume you'd be able to use the dark energy lfo in conjunction with the Moog lfo no problem. the oscillator question is something that really depends on how you want to use it. you'd be able to play Moog and dark energy oscillators with one keyboard, but Im sure you'd have to tweak the parameters separately. I hope this helps.

On other scenario is to play the Dark Energy with no Filter engaged (via Phatty Kbd over Midi) and take the raw OSC out with open DE envelopes into the Phatty Audio in to be processed by the Phatty Filter and envelopes.

As for LFO, certain the Phatty is compatible but keep in mind that most LFOs that push sine/tri wave run from -2.5V to +2.5V (such as the CP-251). The DE has the same specifications; you would merely need to take the 1/8th" cable to 1/4" cable and put it into any of the 3 CVs (Vol, Pitch, Filter) on the Phatty.

You WON'T be able to apply the external DE based LFO into LPs wave (for example) but certainly you can use your internal LFO for this and then use the external for the bits above.

Hope this added information helps. As disclaimer, I haven't tried any of this with the Doepfer gear but the specifications clearly show compatible voltages. Dark Energy, Phatty/Voyager/Taurus, and Oberheim SEMs all play pretty well together these days.

Hi Will o',

To answer your questions, the DE will provide you with an extra oscillator that you can use to expand the Phatty, either as a CV to provide modulations (FM, timbre, or amplitude), or as an extra oscillator (this also works well with the Voyager, too). Note that you can't access DE's oscillator raw output, as it must pass through the DE's filter before going to the VCA, but you can always open the filter all the way (to minimize the effect on the oscillator) and adjust the VCA output so that it passes signal all the time.

As for the LFO, the DE has a separate CV output for LFO1, as well as an envelope CV output (you can't have too many of either, IMHO!). Both of these CV outputs are on 3.5mm jacks, but the conversion to 1/4" isn't much of a problem with a few adapters.

Add to that: you can control the DE from MIDI or from a control voltage, which makes for a very versatile little module. You can also use the DE as a MIDI-to-CV converter - handy!

In short, go for the Dark Energy - you won't be disappointed!

i m in europe now and wanted to take or evolver desktop or dark energy but if i can mix my moog together with DE will be a big expansion to my beloved SP

i apity you cant do the same with evolver

what would be nice and a killer combo would be

do the SP+DE combo and send to evolver Inputs to have High pass, Digital distortion, Feedback And Delay =)

so you will have a huge 3 osc 2 lfo sinth with some killer digital fx i think ill go first with DE and when i get the extra i get evolver

Depends what you are after.

Dark Energy is all analog with the exception of the somewhat limited Midi section (e.g. LFOs are not Midi Sync-able) but offers plenty of patching opportunity.

Evolver has zero patching, is Midi only but has 2 digital OSCs + effects + Step sequencer, hidden behind a somewhat convoluted interface.

If you are a tweaker that just wants to twiddle knobs and experiment primarily with Control Voltages, then DE is for you. If you want all the bells and whistles and have time to delve into dozens if not hundreds of settings/parameters, then the Evolver can be alot of fun.

Doepfer has a knack in making something (even something digitally controlled such as the Dark Time) feel like pure analog; certainly, Dark Energy is pure Analog (about as analog as the Midi SEM, in that there is merely a Midi to CV converter onboard). Dave Smith doesn't care about any of that, he's into packing as much functionality behind a three digit seven segment display as he can.

For pure sound, the DE blows the evolver out of the water. It is more of a tweaker synth, though, less so than a keyboard synth. Doepfer is one of the few modern companies that make not necessarily vintage sounding, but very raw and gritty synths.

Dark Energy is discontinued.

Continuously variable filter mode like the SEM though. Some other major difference from the Dark Energy I as well.
