I'm looking for ways to create more complex modulations from the Voyager, especially pitch modulation of the oscillators.

The manual refers to a combination of the VX-351 and the CP-251 to get staircase waves. I'm not clear as to why both units are needed, as both seem to include an LFO. I'd have expected to be able to use one of these units plus the Voyager's own LFO to do staircasing.

And if anyone has experience of modulating the Voyager from another synth, I'd appreciate the fruits of their experience.

Also, I'm a bit unclear about the mix-out loop. As the tip and ring of one jack in a single socket on the Voyager is used, does that mean a lead is needed that has a single jack on one end and splits into a two cable lead with two jacks at the other, one for the input to the external processor and one for the output? Or am I being thick?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Sweep -

The VX-351 is a 'breakout box' for the Voyager. Among the outputs available from the 351 is the Voyager's LFO. The CP-251 also has an LFO, and contains a mixer which makes it possible to combine several LFOs into more complex modulation signals. This is why you need both.

As for the mixout loop, you need a TRS 'stereo' adapter that breaks out the tip and ring into separate signals. Hosa makes a number of these. You should be able to find them at your locate music store:

I just got a Sherman Filterbank, and I've been connecting the Sherman's ADSR out to the Voyager's input. This gives me a third envelope which is controllable by audio.

So far, it works well to the V-ger's Filter In, and the Mod paths. I use Mod 2 to VCO 2 pitch for rhythmically pulsing sync sweeps. The filter pulsing I can do on the Sherman itself, or with my left hand via Mod Wheel or Touch Pad (now that I think about it, I need to send MIDI from that Touch Pad to the Sherman...)

I've decided to get another synth for some other kinds of sounds, and I'm hoping that'll also do the advanced modulation stuff. Technically it should do. If it doesn't sound the way I want it to, I now know what the situation is with expanding the Voyager. Thanks, Greg.

I got the lead for the mixout loop with no problems. Feeding the loop signal through a flanger and then back to the Moog adds some nice subtleties to the sound.
