Im looking to purchase the SP or LP, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to which they would rather have. Im just getting into electronic instruments and this would be my first synth. would the SP be easier to use? would the LP be more versatile/have more options for the future? ive read the manual for the SP and it actually makes some sense to me, (mostly because of the physics classes I took in college) though im totally new at this.

Little Phatty. Since you're new, you can plug in headphones and be synthing immediately right out of the box . The controls are already set up to do everything intended. If you get a module you will also need to get a controller, and not all controllers will be mapped to the exact functions you need for a particular synth.

I agree with the Little Phatty... They are basically the exact same synth.. Except the Little Phatty has the keyboard, mod and pitch wheels.. more hardware etc...

If your going by MSRP, yes they are more pricy. But you can still find very mint, like new used LP's for 800$ on Ebay and forums... Where as, you will have a very difficult time finding a sub 800$ SP right now since they are so new.

So I say go with the LP first... than later on if you like it, you can think of adding SP's on as extra voices, or upgrading to a Voyager. But a LP is definitely a great introduction to synthesis. So many things you can do with it, and really easy to learn about synthesis with it's interface.

If you understood the SP's manual, than you will understand the LP the same way.. they are both setup the same.

Also, if you get the LP you have the option of the CV output mod. It's looking like that might not be available on the SP (although I'm still hoping that there will be an as-yet-unannounced possibility there). That may or may not matter to you, but it's something to consider.

Slim.....IF i decide to expand, and I think id rather get a sequencer first though.

I would definitely go for the SP, with a separate keyboard of good quality (weighted keys, aftertouch etc).
The SP has everything you need from the LP (incl headphone out), and you can get a better and more flexible keyboard if you buy it separate.
Also, it's a better base to start with if you want to expand in the future - which I'm sure you will once you get started!

My vote is for the LP, for the same reason that I bought a Voyager and not the RME. As great as the RME and SP are, to me, the soul of a machine has something to do with your putting you hands on it. There are tons of artists that have an LP atop their rig, it's the go-to punch bass or soaring lead. Unless you have a Stage Piano and and a Nord lead (or any other combination of two keyboards), a perfect stack has a Moog product somewhere in there.

The CV-out argument is a good one as well.

LP because of the wheels, which I believe operate using 14 bits, while normal midi is only 7 bits (0-127), and they feel good.

WHats interesting to think about is the size of the SP

Basically take two CP 251 modules in their rack shelf and there you go.

Can someone please tell Moog that the CV out is one of the best ideas for a slim phatty. I already own a Voyager but want to get a little phatty for the CV out and awesome vocal leads. If the slim phatty came with CV out I would be all over it.
