Was torn between this or a Voyager RME, after much good advice, I chose the Old School and have zero regrets.

I just got mine today, hooked it up to my modular system and am totally blown away by the sound and how well everything plays together.

Serial Number: OS0060
Location: Brooklyn, New York

(Purchased from the Manhattan Sam Ash store -- a legit dealer, a legit price, but they didn't have the original box for me to take it home in. What gives there? According to the warranty card, I can't even send it to Moog if I have a problem without the original box?!?)

It's my first post here now that I finally have one of these. I'm looking forward to reading the sage advice of all you more experience posters.

You could have gotten a display model which would mean you didn't get a legit price.

It should come factory sealed. I mean if lets say NovaMusik (the store I get Moog from) opened it, they have an open box price. If its used it gets a used price. If its a display model it gets a display model price.

Id be questioning how much fingertime your unit has, theres no telling what someone might have done to it. Im not trying to spoil your purchase, congratulations there!

Id be calling them up wondering why you paid full price for a display unit though. Where did you see it? On the shelf?

Welcome to the forum Scooter! Another fellow MuffWiggler is here as well!

Did you get the VX-351? It's a must have IMO when working with a modular. Fun stuff indeed! :D

BTW, I wouldn't worry about the box as much as the receipt of purchase when it comes to the warranty.

Cheers,
Aaron

Hey There EricK;

You are correct -- it turned out to be a window display model. I was where it was in the window (way off to one side and on the wall) and knew that it wasn't getting hit by the sun or anything. Also, it was in impeccable condition. A little bit of dust on one part, but otherwise untouched. They had a display model in the keyboard area that I did some tweaking time on that was definitely a lot more worn so I was able to judge based on that (wow, the idea of a control group I learned about in psychology class has for once come in handy in real life!).

I agree, they should have given me a tiny price break, but I guess they were already not pleased that I'd walked in with a $200.00 off coupon. I hinted at something, and also at my displeasure at not getting a proper Moog box, but they were (frankly) kinda' scumbags who just wanted to get me out of there. I was tempted to just not buy it, but I've been trying to support local businesses over box warehouses -- although in this case, I admit the probably didn't deserve my business. To be fair, I was pleased to be able to have a Voyage OS to test out before buying, and they did have one of display for me to do so, which is what finalized my allegiance to getting it from them despite dealing with a jackass salesperson.

I'll be keeping a close eye on the unit and giving Sam Ash holy hell if there's any problems. Truth is, I'll probably be dealing more with Moog if there's any problems, and the other vote of confidence in that direction come from the excellent treatment I've seen others receive from Amos and others on this forum during all the time I've been lurking here recently to see how people have been doing with their Voyagers.

Glyph, good to see you on here as well. I'm glad I'm not the only modular freak who's got a Moog in their system. I hooked everything together last night and heard the music of my dreams come pouring out of my system. I like this Voyager OS even more than the ancient Minimoog I had to part with some years ago (no blasphemy intended, of course).

Do I really need the VX-351? It seems like I've got all the functions covered with my modular set-up, but am I missing something in terms of added functionality that this unit will give me? Not that I'll be able to afford to buy anything at all besides Ramen noodles for quite some time...!

Thanks to both of you for your thoughts.

with the vx351, you can use the OS pitch bend and mod wheel CVs to control your modular. you can also use the OS LFO, noise source, and keyboard velocity and pressure aftertouch CVs. Save your clams and get one...it's worth it.

Scooter,

I worked in retail for a long time, trained by walmarts brilliant customer service videos, so I take it very personally when Im treated like im a bother. I think about how much of a douche a salesman might be and then think about how much comission a Voyager probably gives them (Im guessing about 800 bucks in either store profit or comission). I applaud you for wanting to support your local store, but isn't sam ash essentially a huge corporation? Actually Im not knocking you in any way, just thinking about rude salespeople really pisses me off, and the principle eats me up inside; the thought of them rolling around on the floor with my money after treating me like horseshite really bothers me.

Small stores really don't carry any Moog Products. Ive only seen a LP in Guitar Center in Little Rock one time, no foogers tro try ever. Here in Arkansas, I don't think there is a whole lot of people buying Moog stuff.
The fact that you got to play a voyager before you bought one is really nice, as a store won't even order one for you unless you pay most of it up front or all of it. If they can't sell it they don't need it in their store.

Really though, the box isn't that important. I don't have one but sending it to the factory is acceptable in a flight case, which any $3000 anything should have though I am guilty of not having one (why buy a case when I can get 2 foogers?)

Im glad that you seem happy with your purchase, and if anything is wrong Moog can fix it. Cabinets and Keyboards can be purchased and ultimately you probally made a good choise.

Edit: THink about about the car dealerships mantra: If the dealer isn't happy, you got a good deal.

The vx351 is nice if you want to use your voyager to control your modular. If you are a eurorack fan that might pose problems voltage wise, but there are attenuators and such, and Im sure that you know how to solve that problem to make them interface properly. I rarely use mine, but I don't have a massive modular to utilize at this point, just a few foogers. The Voyager is so nice though, Id want the option of using it as the controller for a nice modular or just as a standalone. Its all up to you.

Respectfully,
Eric

Another nice thing about the 351 is that the KB CV out is V/oct! Therefore you can use your OS's KB to control you V/oct oscillators in your modular.

Yeah, you guys are tempting me now with VX-351 lust. Actually I was using my modular set-up to mess with the Moog controls -- I had to hear what would happen when sending some sine waves into the beast (I know the poor thing was not familiar with such a waveform). I guess at some point it would be nice to have the Moog talk-back to the Synthesizers.com/MOTM/Modcan set-up (all stuff is 1/4" so no need for cable adapters and what not), so in six months I'll probably have to get this accessory box.

Sam Ash is definitely not a mom-and-pop operation, but if there had been one in New York that carried the Voyager OS I would have done my best to support them instead of a corporate entity. It's sad when the place you least want to keep funded is the one that gets the stuff you want, makes it available for you to test at at your convenience (and as many times as necessary -- often jumping from the OS to the Little Phatty right near it to help make the final decision) -- and then, when you do buy it from them, they treat you like crap. The final joke is on them as I'll be taking my business elsewhere whenever possible and I'll be definitely be getting any other high-ticket items from other vendors. Pity.

Thanks again, kind folks, and I'll stop hijacking this thread.

P.S. Wow, I guess the serial numbers indicate more than 400 were made.
