Boss dr202 is one of my favorite cheap drum machines. Midi, polyphonic bass/melody sequence, external midi sequence, tons of fx mangling possibility, velocity, and fun to play

If you're looking for reasonable lo-fi, a TR-707 might do the trick: it's got MIDI, trigger out (for analog synths), 6 and 8 bits short samples, easy to use, and usually not too expensive (between 100-300 bucks)...

If you want really lo-fi, a Casio VL-Tone or SK-1 might be fun. But no MIDI there.

The Delptronics analogue drum machine I posted earlier in this thread is only $240. The sequencer on it is totally bad ass, and the trigger out is really fun with synths. . .

I talked myself out of wanting one, saying that there were too many missing bits in the software and that Roger was grumpy and who knew if he would ever get to them.

But after seeing that pic. Really nice. How is the build quality? Does it feel sturdy like all of the pots will be in good shape 5 years from now? (Are they actual Pots like the PE edition of the other Dave Smith kbds, or are they encoders?)

Either way congrats. It's either that or the JoMoX at this point and certainly Tempest has the edge.

When it was announced a few years ago I was interested but put it on the back burner. The other day that interest moved forward after a thought process on something else. I have to update the OS on it so have not been able to check all the functions out. Build quality feels good, the Pads and sliders are pressure sensitive, cool. It’s a combination of encoders and pots, I hear the reliability of the encoders is better than the original Prophet 08. The switches maybe be a bit small, but should be easy to get use to. Sounds are nice. The new OS opens up a bunch of things, one being you can play the Tempest sounds via MIDI from a keyboard. I think they wanted to release it as soon as possible ( late 2011 ?) so the original OS had the basics. There have been at least two OS Updates so far.

The Tempest is very deep in what you can program, there is a bit of a learning curve but will be worth it, what you can do in real time will make you say “wow”. Several things you can figure out but sure I will be spending time with the manual and a few YouTubes. Roger has a quick start that I think is pretty well done. Lots of real time things you can do on the fly with it.

@Kevin, I have an “Everlasting” tree so no need to go out. If you need one there’s an old one sitting around. But shipping it out there would be more than a new one .

After lightly using the Tempest the past few days it is for sure a WOW! Example, create a beat on one pad, while that beat is playing can copy it to another pad then delete or add parts and or beats. you can drop into play mode to practice, then go back into record without stopping. Say you want to change the tuning, env, or even sound on one pad... you can do that while the pattern is playing, then commit it to the pattern in real time by pressing record.

You are supposedto be able to enter a mode where you can have a “sequence” playing from a single pad, say a bass line, while other things are played on the remaining pads. I haven't even scratched the surface yet on what it can do, but it is for sure a WOW instrument. That being said it may not be for everyone, but is worth checking out. Looking forward to recording some things from it and adding parts from the other synths.
