My fave is the cello, it just sounds so sad and depressing I feel like I should be scoring a funeral scene in a movie with it. The only issues mine has is that the key contacts are little dirty but I'm going to have them cleaned as soon as I find someone I trust enough to touch it.

Have you managed to come up with any good patches for the synth section yet? I made a pretty good brass sound but a decent electric piano or keyboard sound still eludes me. I'm not too fusses though because the strings are what I wanted it for and they do not disappoint!

The only thing I'm concerned about is that does have all the original power supply stuff and I heard these go south on Omnis pretty often. Its working fine now, I'm just going to hope it stays that way.

Hello,

Percussive/comp-type parts are a problem on the Omni because of the one vca however, the synth section works well when used for pad sounds.
If you have a Mooger CP-251, the S/H & lfo can be used to modulate the filter in combination with the internal lfo and/or you can feed the synth section directly through a Murf (used as a fixed formant filter). This will allow you to double the string section by tuning the Murf's formants to approximate one of the string voices. The string voice is routed through the internal chorus board full wet and the synth section can be sent direct thru an external chorus (Boss Dimension is most transparent). When the two sections are combined at a mixer, result is quite nice.
Ezzo, whats your general geographic location? There are a few people who still work on them.

Regards,

Lawrence

Thanks for the tip on the MURF it sounds like it would be worth looking into. I'm located in Vancouver, British Columbia. There are lots of music stores here and lots of bands with synth players, they must get their fear serviced by someone I just haven't found them yet.

Michael, I know what you mean about the Closer sound it was probably the first synth string I heard that ever really grabbed me. When I first heard it I just though of all the wonderful things I could do with that sound. The fact that its basically a preset sound makes getting it just right pretty easy too. I like the fact that I can get pretty close to a lot of the mid 70's pink floyd string sound with it too. As far sad sounding I couldn't agree more when I bust out that cello sound I almost want to reach for the tissues :D

I like the Andromeda for Moogy/CS-80ish strings.

...but I bet I'd like a multi-tracked Voyager more. :)

I bought an Arp Omni because, for years and years, I've always been haunted by that JOY DIVISION string synth sound. I don't even like Joy Division much anymore, but I still think that sound is amazing. I've used other keyboards and made patches on them to try and emulate this sound: Farfisa Organ through Phaser, Poly800, Juno 60, Jupiter 6, Jx3P, ect. Some polys get it better than others, all come pretty close. I think 1 oscillator polys, like a Juno 60 w/sub osc and chorus, probably work best.

Well I eventually just bought an Omni I. I'm fairly certain JD used the Omni I, despite what many websites report. You can see them play it on the "Love will tear us apart" vid.

I like dedicated instruments that are very simple and really great at getting specific sounds, like a Farfisa or MiniMoog, versus synths that try to do everything and end up doing very little right, like a Jupiter. So, I have no problem with and actually prefer a limited keyboard like the Omni. Plus Omni's are very inexpensive if you're patient enough to wait for a good deal.

Unfortunately, this Omni pretty much immediately started breaking down (the parts that were working to begin with that is). There are so many parts in this synth that go bad over time, it's ridiculous.

Despite that however, I have to say, I was a little disappointed in it's sound. I mean, it sounded really good. But it didn't sound that much different than all those polysynths I'd been using to emulate it with over the years.

I've been playing synths for maybe 15 years, and I think I have a pretty good ear for their subtleties, and I just don't hear that much difference. Although I didn't have that much playable time with it, and it's still under repair.

So, this is just a small warning about the Omni.
