Strings like that are easy on my JX3P. So I'd think they were using a Roland Juno or something like it about the time the song was released.
I use my JX3P and MKS30 as pad machines for the more lush stuff. I did buy the Ensoniq for the brighter, harsher sounds it was able to do, but it also does very smooth lush pads if programmed that way. Heck, even my CZ-5000 can do some great pads but it is a nightmare to program. (I still don't understand it well yet.)

Without having listened to that clip i particular I can say that the DSI P'08 and Tetra can sound very Oberheim like, esp OB-Xa/OB-8 type sounds.

If you don't mind the lack of hands-on I'd actually recommend two tetra's polychained over a P'08 due to the addition of the sub-oscillators and feedback. Otherwise go for the P'08 Pot Edition.

I own a tetra and am very pleased with it. I might get another one and polychain it as I'd like to be able to do a stack with 4 voices and to have 8 voices when playing a regular patch.

Also while on the DSI subject, if you think that their synths sound too clean, I usually set the slop (emulated drift) to 5, set noise to about 8-10 and finally set noise as mod source and filter cutoff as mod dest with just 1-2 in mod amt. This makes the sound dirtier and imho nicer :)

I read that you're looking for a keyboard synth,
so my advice would probably sound a bit OT to your needs
but I'd strongly suggest you to check the oberheim matrix1000 out.
I have one (paid 200€) with a software editor.
pure 6 voices analog pad joy, incredible modulation capabilities and really low price for the quality.

the synth most likely used for those strings is the prophet 5. And it would compliment the Moog nicely

otherwise I'd check out a few of the other suggestions. I've not found a satisfying poly synth as of yet that is digital and I don't like the prophet except for brass sounds. (I don't love DSI stuff much)

I have a roland jd800 which does amazing ambient pads and sounds big. It goes well with the moog, as does the kurzweil (which is just straight up a crazy machine w/the sampler sheesh) . The jd is brighter though. Still not exactly the old poly sounds though. two videos of the jd800 w/ minimoog and oberheim matrix.
