Does anyone have any idea what the limited number is for the Moog VO guitar?

BTW, how does one get a previously quoted sentence inserted here with the gray shading?

Moog Cost

Post by Stuartpa » Wed Jan 21, 2009 1:50 am

I know I know I'm lucky, I can afford one and I've got one. But Magic is the right word for this one.

I personally would have preferred it to have come with and set up with Medium gauge strings but that's about it. Even at that it played with the heavy gauge so well I almost wished I hadn't changed them for the medium gauge strings and the Box of light ones.

It really is a good looking guitar and I think this is going to be a revolutionary item. I remember in England in to 60's looking at the prices of Strats and Les Pauls Etc, that cost a fortune while you folks over here were buying them for next to nothing.

No this one is worth the money. I wouldn't change it even for a Buscarino, and he really knows how to make incredible guitars. They cost a real bundle for one of his top of the line jobs. Probably take you a few years to get one as well.

I still play my Strat, but I have to admit that apart from one, I am currently totally stuck on the Moog. IT really only looks like a guitar, it is really something else. It does have a guitar simulator in it and it is all ANALOG, yup it's real.

Thanks for sharing that bit of info! Very cool! The only way Moog is going to earn my business with a $6495 price tag is by offering a polysynth with it.

Playing one first

Post by Stuartpa » Wed Jan 21, 2009 8:19 pm

I have to admit I made lucky decision, I had a lot of help there because I have a good relationship with Sweetwater, but that is not the case for everyone.
I was always told as a kid "Never buy a pig in a Poke (Old English for a sack)"
The guitar really is something I have wanted for a long time and I am sure a lot of others too. It really opens things up for experimental music and probably a new type of playing altogether.

But there is no doubt this is not for everyone and having the chance to at least try one out before you get it would be something that should be done. Most of these types of sale are you bought it it's yours.

Not what I would have thought was a good way to introduce an Axe as revolutionary as this is. Not everyone can get to the trade shows and I have seen nothing substantial about it in Guitar Player or Guitar World.

When I play it it is a bit like I become the oscillator for an actual synth in some of the Modes and once I get around to using the CV on the pedal, I will become the basic audio source with very fine control over any Mooger stuff I have between me and the Amp. I'll have to check on the pedal to see if it is output or input only. I never read manuals, maybe I should start. By the way the manual for this guitar is really small. A few suggestions and some control descriptions and mate you are on your own. At least they make sure you have a full set of tools to work on it with and some recommendations as well. I suppose apart from describing the controls, the rest is really up to you in any case.

I just hope more folks get their guitars soon, as I would like to come here and get some playing tips, and maybe even offer a few.

Maybe it is because I only live about 40 miles from where they make em, that I got mine. It still took over 3 months to get it.
I am bit curious to know how long people have been waiting for their guitars.

They are by the way, worth waiting for.

I think the pedal is an input only.

In one of the namm videos from last year cyril lance, I think it was him, said that there is only cv in, for right now. Can you imagine what they are cooking up for cv outs, pitch to cv, gate, envelope out, or maybe some sort of cv snake out with two cables for each string. pitch and gate so you could hook it up to 6 Voyagers!!! Each one dedicated to one string one the moog guitar!!!!!

I don't know, considering it just has a filter in there, it may not have many options.

The Moog guitar is more than the sum of its parts, and that's why I think a lot of you blokes can't wrap your heads around the value of it. You can buy it for about 25% of the cost of a decent Buchla 200e system, and it is equally powerful as creative inspiration. How much would you pay to get creatively inspired? Spend about $15,000 for a beat up pre-CBS sunburst strat and the mystique might inspire you, but in the end you have bought a conventional guitar and you are left with the same technique and ideas that you've always had.

Bob's ghost is in this guitar, weirdly enough. It is a quirkly little beast that you never quite understand. It's got its flaws: the electronics heat up, it kinda has the look of dated bling, and the stickers near the controls look god-awfully chintzy. Not a big fan of how the pickups sound when used conventionally, either. But you shouldn't use this guitar conventionally, just like you shouldn't use your Ducati 1198 to drop off your kid at school. The instrument is quite deep, and I didn't really appreciate how deep until I started spening hours with it, putting it through various effects and amps, firing up all manner of foogers and other CV sources and chains.

Maybe it is too niche-targeted, and only will appeal to geeks who have a foot in both camps, that of synthesists and guitarists. Maybe it will ultimately fail as a corporate product line, but there is nothing else that does what it does. Also, most audiences have never seen or heard these, and they do tend to get a bit excited about hearing one for the first time....

I run my Gibson thrugh just about every moog Fooger made I even run it through my Voyager. I've been playing for almost 40 years now I guess in a way I have had a MOOG Guitar all these years I just use my voyager and my foogers and if I don't have my feet in both camps then no one does.

The Moog guitar will never replace my Voyager and all my Foogers but useing my Gibson or my Bass with my voyager and foggers why would I need a Moog Guitar but if the Moog Guitar was 3000 less I might buy one.

But if It came down to it today I'd drop the 6k on another Voyager, a RME this time and another Gison. I promise you Bob Is Alive and well in every peice of Moog Equipment not his Ghost. For me he will live on as long as one of us creates and pushes the enveople with his creations.
