Mackie Big Knob for the studio. I had been using a mackie 1202VLZ to feed the monitors, worked well for the past several years. Decided it was time for a change . The 1202 will still have many uses down the road. You can never have too many mixers laying around .

Did receive an order I placed with Synthesizers.com this Friday. Ordered up a portable cabinet, an envelope generator and three CRS circuit boards. Wonder how long it will take to fill that cabinet? That EG looks lonely sitting there by itself.





Actually took me about three hours to fill the cabinet, most of the evening. Had to drill holes and mount the power supply. Not much room in there and only a little clearance between the modules and PS. Had to mount and calibrate the CRS to the oscillators, but in a little time the Dotcom was playing nice for me.

Sounds really good, and the best part is it sounds like a Dotcom. I never really thought I wanted one of these, based on so many claiming it sounded like a Moog modular. But it does have a unique tone and character, and with the Moog filter, probably sounds closer to a Minimoog than it does to any other Moog I have here. Most of those modules I purchased by accident, as they were almost giving these away used on the internet. Nice to finally put them all together into a unit. Just a basic Minimoog style setup with three oscillators, two envelopes, two VCA's, a noise source, sample and hold, and two mixers. I need to spend a little time to get to know this new synth better.

Roger Arrick makes a really nice product and delivers on time as quoted. Perhaps one of the best business models in the modular world today.
Looks like I might have to move the oscillators to the top tier, as the patch cables get in the way of the range and frequency controls. Having fun now, all patched up!

Hey CZ; what's your feedback on the STG Mixer vs. the .com? I bought the STG and like the fact that you can drive the distortion up but I'm sure that is nothing new to you.

That's another new acquisition, an old Roland MKB-1000 in very nice condition. Picked that up last week for 400 bucks. Needed a replacement for the Phatty as a MIDI controller in my live rig.(Ghost in the machine?) Also needed a stand/table to set the modulars on, and the Roland will do both jobs nicely. A heavy controller, it weighs about 100 Lbs., but the 88 wooden key action is really nice and very fast. Also a great composition tool, a real game changer for me. Only does basic MIDI control functions. Mostly a two channel splitable keyboard, with no menu diving, has velocity but no aftertouch. But will do everything I need for a live performance controller. Very easy to setup and get the sound you need via 16 patch and 8 bank buttons. Fun to play a 7 octave run on the Dotcom with that, and the Q106 oscillators do track the full range.


Haven't spent enough time to comment on the dotcom and STG mixers. Both get nice distortions using a feedback loop. Took me over a year to learn all the subtleties of those Moog CP3 mixers. On the Moog I'll use the 905 reverb in the feedback loop, and just dial in different ammounts via the large dial on the 905. The reverb signal is lower volume than the straight signal, and the 905 dial adjusts between the two for some really nice tonal variations. Turn it all the way to the left and it goes to eleven!
So I could end up with a patch something like that using the Q147 distributor to feedback into either or both mixers. The 905 reverb trick is fun though. Need much more time with the Dotcom to explore all the options and varations to find those magic tones.
