I've made some awesome Reason NN-XT sampler patches from my LP. I've had some friends play them and most of them couldn't tell it wasn't the LP.

Unless you really need the money from this sale to buy the Odyssey, I'd strongly suggest waiting until you're familiar with the Odyssey before being sure about selling the Arturia.

In addition to obvious advantages like polyphony and the sequencer, the Arturia's extra features add a lot to the instrument. As you have several filter options, and the tracking generator, you have possibilities that the original 2600 can't match, let alone an Odyssey.

I compared the Arturia with the Timewarp 2600 emulation, which is supposed to be closer to the original, and I have to say the Arturia is sonically superior and more versatile, regardless of how accurate it may be as a virtual 2600.

Of course it depends on what you need for your particular music. If you don't need the Arturia Modular V through having the LP I can see why you may not feel you need the extra features of the 2600V either. But from my own experience I'd definitely advise waiting until you're sure.

Here is the way I set up my rig.

Nord Electro 73, Moog Little Phatty on top via 2nd tier,
Casio Wk-3500 on another stand.

two yamaha 15's behind me, and a soundcraft gig rac amp to power the speakers.


i am in my own keyboard world. takes up about maybe 7 square feet? (speakers inclusive)

The Nord G2 is awesome. The presets it come with don't sound quite as Moog like as the Minimoogy_G2 that you can find on the electromusic.com forums. That is an excellent synth! I'm looking for ways to get the sequencers in the Nord to speak to my Moogerfooger modular system...

I love the Minimonsta as well. But live, the Phatty is great and reliable...

I don't believe in VST's.

I love my copy of the Moog Mod V2 and I own a Phatty and a Voyager. The Arturia VST has a nice sequencer and is polyphonic. It comes in mighty handy in some of my live performances. It's got an aggressive and plastic sound that I like.

Arturia's 2600 emulation is king!

best solution - use your phatty as a midi controller for the moog modularV software projected to actual size behind you! ha- this would be great. i think T-dream or k. shulze did something just like this not long ago. ( forgive me for not knowing which one)

VST or not, sample or live synthetic or natural, its all good.

Personally, I don't believe that the sound produced by a VST would even compare to a sound which you can produce from a synth. There's just no way. In personal experience I've found VST's to sound extremely flat and 2-dimensional. It just can't compete with having a synth "in the flesh" at your disposal.

yeah , they do have their place, just not comparing side by side to the real thing. At the end of the day, it's gonna impart the character of your soundcard / interface more than anything. And don't get me started on virtual modulation. When i heard analog PWM for the first time, i was like, "oh this is what VA is trying to accomplish" it sounds like a cheap phasing effect instead of the deep harmonic interplay with the phase cancelations. but, i do own the modularV , arp2600 , and cs80 alturia software, cause when the hell am i gonna buy a real one of those , i still rent. i don't even touch the mini software by the same maker since getting the LP and some 'foogers.

I have used the Moog Modular and MiniMoog software with fruityloops and such. THey are a great alternative. Much like taking the bus is a great alternative if you can't drive across country, I personally never want to take a bus trip again.

But one thing sometimes overlooked is the creative arrangements that go into the music. You can have a system 55 and if you can't write or play its not going to be very great. But if thats all that you can manage is to pirate some software you can make some music that has some bass that will still shake your boots loose.

i would like to put my vote in for the arturia minimoog vst. i used that before i got my phatty, and for shits and giggles i fired it up along side my phatty a month ago, and was still very pleased with how the program sounds. you dont get hands on control on the fly as easy, but if you dont need to mess with many parameters live, it works just fine. laptop and arturia minimoog and maybe a small midi controller, and you will be gigging lightly in no time.
