i totally understand what you're getting at, and i guess i just have to try stuff out. i'm very interested in seeing what an ebow does to my playing.
it's funny, in the past i've bought pieces of equipment with in mind one genre, but later on i end up using it for a whole lot more!
i think it's really good to try the pedal out in a store before you buy (assuming that's possible), but one word of caution, via a personal anecdote- the way i got a sweet deal on my MF-102 was through a friend who bought one, played it for a week, and decided it wasn't making the sounds he was hoping it would. the first time after that we got together to play, and i was getting some great sounds out of it right off the bat, i could tell he was a bit chagrined when he realized he simply hadn't spent enough time with the unit. heh.
if you can try one out in a store, keep in mind that it may not open all its secrets in a 15 minute session.
btw, the ebow/MF-101 combination ROCKS!

and one other thing- any kind of modulation effect (like tremolo, phaser, etc.) ahead of a lowpass in your signal chain will (obviously) create some interesting sonics. a lot of the MF-101's charms come out in combination with other effects. this can take time to suss out, but is well worth the time spent experimenting...
