mf108 doesnt sync to midiclock *fixed*

Post by peter ripa » Sat Nov 12, 2011 12:43 pm

my recently arrived 108, #424 doesnt recognize or sync to midi clock.
i know theres clock in the midicable, ive tried 2 midi interfaces, 2 cables and a thruport from a device that verifies midi clock is present.
although midi sync should on by default at power up ive also tried sending a cc to turn it on with no result. the midi led lights up red when it gets not msgs but never yellow ( to indicate sync as stated in manual)
ive also had a couple of episodes where midi stopped working completely and i had to reboot my 108 to get it back

anyone with similar problems or thoughts?

I've got a very early serial number (#20) and had the same problem when I got mine.

Not sure if there has been any change to firmware or default settings along the way but you should be able to do the following to get past this:

1. Verify that midi is working (connectivity) by 'playing' standard midi noted around middle C
2. Have a look at the manual and find the CC number for Clock control on/off then either map a control on your kbd to toggle the setting or get some software that will let you do same

Settings are written to nvram upon poweroff.

Worked for me and I haven't had any issues since but I was pulling my hair out when I first had the problem despite what the manual/default setting was supposed to be.

Do you get blinking midi light when pressing keys on midi attached kbd? If not its not listening?

What app/controller are you using to send the CC76? May be worth trying to send something which will show obvious success like #91 (Bypass on/off). Could be some filtering going on? Just guessing here.

Another thought, are all real-time commands coming through (including machine control). I think you'll need a start/stop also, not just the clock. What are you driving it with, a drum or Logic or other DAW?

And I suppose you've been successful driving external modules from your Cubase clock? Assuming so, it may be worth a hard reset and a call to Moog. At this point there are 100's out there.

I would be interested to hear if others have had issues.

I had no issues with mine until today. I powered up and the LED didn't go yellow. I tried everything and I could not get it to listen to the midi clock.

I had to power it down, disconnect the midi and all cv leads, power off the drum machine sending midi. Power up the drum machine, reconnect leads to the flux and then power it back up. Hey presto, yellow LED and midi clock sync. I later turned everything off and came back to my set up a few hours later. powered it all up - same problem!! This time, despite following the process that worked before - nothing. I could not get it accept the midi clock at all.

Very confused!

when your 108 is in the "not listening to midiclock"-state, does it receive midi notes and ccs?
whats your serial?

i talked to moogsupport yesterday and the guy there didnt know anything, said someone else would contact me but nothing yet.

I'm not too sure. I don't use midi, other than a clock to sync me to my drummers metronome. The world of midi messages is a taboo to me!

I did try to make my MP-201 resend the enable midi clock sync message (although the manual says it defaults to this when it's powered up), but I coul only get it to work in a momentary fashion, eg. When I help the footswitch down on the MP-201 the rate light went yellow. Release the footswitch and it turned red again. I tried this same experiment later when I came back to my stuff and couldn't get it to work at all!? Odd.

I tried a feed straight from a drum machine, and also from the midi thru of the MP-201. Nothing. MP-201 is recieving time clock as per usual.

I sent my post to the guys at Moog Tech support earlier and just received this reply...

Hi-
Sorry for the trouble that you are having with your MF-108M Cluster
Flux. There is a bug in the current firmware for the 108 that causes the
LFO MIDI sync to not work if you are sending any MIDI to it whatsoever
when you power it up. Our engineers have found that if you power it up
with no MIDI connected, and then connect MIDI that the MIDI should then
always work. There is a firmware update for the MF-108 that is imminent
and it should fix this issue. Let me know if this helps.
Thanks,
Rosser
