SP sysex woes

Post by RokGeetar » Tue Feb 08, 2011 3:58 pm

Hi all

I'm having a few problems loading presets into my SP. I have tried these preset files:

http://www.moogmusic.com/software/LP_TE ... sounds.zip
http://www.moogmusic.com/software/LP_SE ... sounds.zip
http://www.moogmusic.com/software/stage ... resets.syx

The only one that loads in anywhere correctly is the stage_2_presets, but some of the names are corrupted. The others load in but are completely corrupted (names are gibberish and sounds are not right). Also when I dump the SP presets and then load them straight back in some of the names are corrupted although the sounds seem ok. So I need to restore to factory defaults to get back working. Not good if I want to use another bank or create my own patches :(

I'm using Midiox which is sending and receiving ok through USB to/from the SP. I have tried a different USB cable with no difference. Help please!

For info - PC WinXP sp3

did you try sending the sysex slower? I assume there's an option for that. Are other synths receiving the sysex correctly when doing it the same way?

I tried increasing the Midiox buffer sizes to 1024, and reducing them to 64 with the same results. I don't have any other synths that I can send sysex files to.

I also tried a different USB port, same thing.

Any other suggestions appreciated!

Guys, I need a little help here!

If anyone has used Midiox to successfully load these presets into a Slim Phatty via USB under Windows XP, then it would be great if you could let me know the buffer settings you used etc. Do you think I should try using MIDI in and out cables instead of MIDI over USB?

hi-
The most usable buffer settings for MIDI-OX seem to be 1024/256. Since the LP does not have to be set to receive MIDI data, the remaining problems would be to configure your MIDI output device correctly, and to make sure MIDI-OX can 'see' the device. I use a M-audio-UNO, and it is pure simplicity. Check for OS specific drivers for the device as well. I use Win XP pro, v.3. Also, you might try using a different program to un-zip the .zip files. I use a photo program, but have used 'winzip', and 'pkunzip' as well. Never found one to be better than the other, but like free and reliable programs. :D

Hope this helps.
Best luck-

BTW- I seem to recall seeing a post about USB direct instead of MIDI cables. I believe MIDI cables are preferred, but don't actually know why. USB is the 'new' serial port, and should, by now, be 'universal.' But maybe not in this case.

Definitely try this if it's an option. "Standard" (ye olde) MIDI runs at a slower rate and so may avoid the errors you're having with the USB, which sounds like missed packets of data. I have seen MIDI-OX have issues sending sysex via USB before; the simplest fix would be to slow down the speed but there isn't a simple slider for this in MIDI-OX (as there is in sysEx librarian for mac, for instance). One thing you could try with the USB: in MIDI-OX, go to View->Sysex, and in the Sysex View window, go to the Sysex menu and choose Configure. Below the OK and Cancel buttons there should be a "delay between packets" setting. Try doubling this number and see if it helps. Or, again, try the standard MIDI if you have such an interface.

At the root of it I think this is a MIDI-OX problem, as I have used other (custom) software on Windows to send sysex directly via LP USB with no errors. And, a lot of time, I've used MIDI-OX via USB with no errors... but it's not always successful. So I don't have a clear-cut answer. Hope this helps.

Alright! Now we're cookin' 8)

All presets load perfectly when using bog MIDI cables! Not sure why that is, it'd be nicer and tidier if USB worked ok for sysex, but now I've got 300 more presets to mangle!

Is there any advantage to using USB rather than DIN from Cubase? Could I have both USB and DINs plugged in at the same time so that Cubase can use USB and Midi-ox can use DIN? Any reasons for or against doing that?

Thanks for your help.

Great news !
As long as the software knows which path to follow, I don't see why you should have to be unplugging cables all the time. I'm not familiar with the SP operating system (yet :D ), but inputs are inputs, up to a point.
I think it would be great if everything used WiFi myself. heh.

Play on !
