Boss RE-20

Has anyone used a Boss RE-20 with a LP? do they sound good together? and does anyone know if it is actually Analog?

LP->Analog
RE-20->Analog-modeled. Sounds pretty decent, but it's definitely not analog. Get a bucket-brigade delay or a re-201 if you want analog.

I use an RE 20 with my Voyager (I know you want info for a LP) and I think it sounds great. It's well made, reliable, has reverb, tap tempo and is stereo.

The RE-20 intrigued me but I thought it was a bit pricey and I wanted to keep the audio chain as analog as possible until the computer

i have one. very noisy. i agree with CTRLSHFT that if you have the $$$ then buy a re-201 instead. re 201 is much warmer and much better sounding.

alright thanks. what I really want is a MF-104z, but I don't know if it is worth $700. are there any good alternates?

The aforementioned Memory Boy/Memory Toy are the cheapest solutions to analog delay I can think of. You might also want to check out the EHX Deluxe Memory Man, MXR Carbon Copy, or the Maxon AD-999. They're all fairly affordable for what they do. Up from that I'd suggest the Diamond Memory Lane 2, which has tap tempo, and sounds fantastic.

...The 104z is still the best BBD I've ever owned though. Save up!

It sounds amazing with the LP

A used MF-104Z is the way to go, I think.

The loop and the CV possibilities really set the Moog delay apart.

From what I have always heard, the 104z has the longest delay time of any other (analog) on the market. Due to the type and number of the chips used in the bucket brigade setup, this wasn't even made for a long time. It is surpassed only by the now collectable 104SD.

But Im sure someone else can answer that better than I can.

However, find an analog delay that sounds better.
Find one that is CV, and find one that is built as well and it will probably cost the same.

I do think that it is a bit extreme to pay this much for an effect like a delay...an effect that is available on just about every amp, every mixer or processor. But for those that can, let them. I did.

Definately, the longest non-tape analog delay. I think couple boutique pedals match its delay time, I have not found one that goes longer.

Selling for $550-$600 on the used market is out of my price range for quite a while (until my skill or savings gets to a point to warrent so). When the time comes, it will be tough for me to choose between a roland/korg tape echo and the 104z.

Wish I could say why... maybe has something to do with the type of BBD chips they use, because you can get a Maxon AD-999 with 900ms delay for almost half the price. I'm sure the extra circuits beyond just the delay part have something to do with it.

The maleko delays are pretty nice too from what I've seen and heard. Or if you want a cheap (but heavy) tape echo. Go to a thrift store and pic up a reel to reel for a couple bucks, mixer fx send or right chanel out to the input of reel to reel then reel out put to one of the mixer chanels. TaDa! Tape echo!

Side note on the ehx memory boy I believe the expression pedal input excepts control voltages!

The key thing for me is that I can hand-tweak the Delay Time and have the expected effect of changing the pitch, formant, and tempo like an analog pedal.

Most analog delay emulations will completely garble the order of notes trapped in the delay loop if you change the delay time.

The other reason I like it is that it is true stereo, not only in that there are true Left/Right input jacks, but that the left and right echo are completely isolated from each other. Most "stereo" pedals sum your stereo signal to mono and then affect it. Sure, the Dry percentage of your signal is still in whatever stereo you sent it, but that gets ruined because the delays are mono.
