Midi over USB (CC resolution)

Post by toryjames » Fri Apr 10, 2009 9:41 pm

Does the USB jack offer increased resolution over control parameters or is it the same resolution as MIDI? (8-bit)

I think it's 14-bit, like the DIN jacks. Older MIDI devices were 7-bit, whereas newer MIDI devices are 14 bit. :)

Oh, 7-bit. Thanks for responding so quickly. So the MIDI input is 14-bit as well? I have yet to hook it up to anything (MIDI or USB). Guess I should do that.

Yes. Although it is compatible with 7 bit applications. I only use MIDI for patch storage and the like, so the resolution doesn't mean much to me. But some people use it all the time, and for those people, they need the 14 bit resolution.

If I recall correctly, not all of the parameters are 14 bit.

From the manual LP 2.0 Addendum:

The Modulation Wheel and Filter Cutoff parameters now send and receive high-resolution, 14-bit Midi CC
messages. This allows for fi ner control and smoother changes, whether you are using the LP as a MIDI con-
troller, or controlling the LP via MIDI from your sequencer. The MIDI CC channels are mapped as follows;
MSB indicates the “regular” CC number for the parameter, and LSB indicates the high-resolution fi ne control.
If you are only sending 7-bit MIDI CC to the LP, use the MSB channel number by itself.
MOD WHEEL:
MOD WHEEL:
MOD WHEEL: MSB = 1, LSB = 33
FILTER CUTOFF: MSB = 19, LSB = 51

Yeah, I remember that. Thanks for clarifying, Bryan T.

hey voltor,

..with your love of interconnecting equipment, why not give MIDI a try using a CV-MIDI converter? ... some pretty amazing things you can whip up...

..remember the filter resolution is HUGE... super smooth... if you hear stepping using it you should be conducting the NY Philharmonic your ears are so good...

I'd rather get a MIDI to CV converter. That would give me CV outputs on my LP. I am aware of the possibilities of MIDI, but I'd rather do things the old-fashioned way...with voltage. Of course, I'll be going more into MIDI after I get my Taurus III's and .com cabinets, but for now, I'll stick with CV.

That's the sort of thing that would have been useful to include in your post instead of saying that it is 14-bit. As I understand it, almost all of the parameters are 7-bit with just a few exceptions. :)
