I searched this forum for 'buttons' and found some people complaining about them, while others were quite happy. I think Moog actually changed the buttons somewhere in the middle of the Stage 1 run. Can anyone confirm this?
Before buying, I played a Stage 1 at Guitar Center. The buttons felt like they were made from very hard plastic, and I had to press firmly to select a parameter. I recently bought a Stage 1 (used) and received it in the mail today. My LP has softer-feeling buttons and they will select parameters with a much lighter touch.
I like the softer feel, but I'm thinking they may have made the change in production because the softer buttons wear out quicker? Mine work perfectly at the moment, gladly. Then again, I could just be imagining a difference in the one I played at GC. I dunno.
Different buttons - hard and soft
My Stage I is 1326. The buttons are pleasantly firm. All I know is that they are made of silicone and covered with a coating of some kind.

Umm. The buttons on my Stage II (#4040, I believe) are definitely squishy. Even a little wiggly. I can pinch them and the give a little - that said, I would also call them firm, they don't give a lot ... like other things one might refer to as firm ... and might be made out of silicon, too, I guess.
Anyway, they definitely are not hard plastic.
The action on them is nice, too. Not resistant, but there's definite feedback. The buttons, that is.

At some point (maybe the middle of the stage 1 run?) we did switch to a different manufacturer for the buttons. Technically the are "the same" meaning a firm silicone material. The finish does look a bit different, one type to the other, and this gives them a slightly different surface texture, one more glossy and the other more matte... but they are functionally the same and should work equally well.
