i listen his records since 30 years now and it's always pure and actual.
he uses a lot of Moog and in his last concert we can see a LP on his stage, and some voyagers, minimoog and modular too!!

i'm in Montreal and nobody around me knows him!!!Prime NL wrote:I think that almost nobody here needs an introduction to JMJ...he is one of the best known and world famous synth players around.
this is the reason of my post, i'm happy if you know him but you and me are not the rest of the world!! and you're european, but in usa and canada it's not the same thing.
thanks
I could not imagine somebody else over in Canada not knowing JMJ...could be due to the fact i am from the Netherlands / Europe...so JMJ is unavoidable for us...
Did you check btw. the following DVD : Oxygen - Live In Your Living Room
If so...you can see him playing live on all his synths....especially on a big screen with the surround on eleven is synth heaven...

SOme of these people, I never have been exposed to.
People like him...I still haven't heard any of his music.
THe Mahavishnu Orchestra, I neer listened to until the other day.
A lot of ELP and Wakeman stufff just wasn't exposed to.
TOmita, EMO people like that...just never was exposed to.
My father has hundreds of Jazz records...is a classically trained Jazz pianist himself. He went in a different direction so this is why I lean more towards Herbie and Chick rather than Wakeman and Emerson.
And I grew up in the 80's so I grew up on 80's pop and my sister 5 years older than me exposed me to metallica and those heavy metal bands.
So im probably the only person that needs the introduction lol.
Theres so many niches, so little time.

You must be in the wrong part of Montreal!christophe1966 wrote:i'm in Montreal and nobody around me knows him!!!
He's hardly a household name anywhere, but most people who listen to electronic music have, I imagine, heard of him. Even in Montreal.

Jean Michel Jarre is one of the greatest composers of our time! He's really well known here to electronic musicians also, but many people here would recognize Oxygene 2 and (I think) 4 cause they were used in an Australian movie, Gallipoli.

While I agree that JMJ is a fine composer and musician, I think "one of the greatest composers of our time!" is a wee bit of an overstatementjamezdd73 wrote:Jean Michel Jarre is one of the greatest composers of our time!

You're probably right, I think I got a bit carried away.Matt Friedman wrote:While I agree that JMJ is a fine composer and musician, I think "one of the greatest composers of our time!" is a wee bit of an overstatementjamezdd73 wrote:Jean Michel Jarre is one of the greatest composers of our time!
Oxygene is pure genius in my opinion though.

I've known about JMJ since I was a kid, but I didn't actually get to really get into him until quite recently. Sound On Sound did a great story on the making of "Live In Your Living Room", and then shortly after I found the DVD. I highly recommend it; I think it's awesome. It's interesting to note that Oxygene was one of the first records done in a home studio.
There's a cool special feature where he goes through and talks about some of the gear used which is worth checking out as well.
