Favorite keyboardist/synthesist?
This YouTube film contains nearly ten minutes of a live track by Tim Blake (the first part of Synthese Intemporel, from the album Crystal Machine).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQr5LfDo8nw
It's film taken in Rhodes, with Tim's music added, and not film of Tim in concert, though there are also a couple of clips of Tim himself on the net as well.
This is Tim Blake with a MiniMoog, two modified EMS synths, and an Elka Rhapsody.
I thought I'd post this for anyone who hasn't heard what Tim can do - his use of sound textures and his expression and so forth.
The playing on the Crystal Machine album as a whole is breathtaking. Last Ride of the Boogie Child on that album contains some of the finest synth playing I've ever heard, from anyone.

Hard to beat Keith Emerson as an all time fave rave. Currently though I'm in love with Hiromi Uehara. Plays a lot like Keith but a lot easier on the eyes.
Check it out!

Just out of curiosity robles, you do know that Keith's flying piano was a gag... that it was fake, don't you? I do recall that several reputable keyboardists inquired how he was able to maintain playing while the thing was in motion. If I'm not mistaken, he stuck his tongue in his cheek and kept his mouth shut for years before he said anything on the subject.robles wrote:As for Emerson, well, what can I say. Someone had to be the one who took keyboard excess further than anyone else, and in the prog rock arena (my favored style) Emo is it. I mean, flying piano! Who can top that?
He eventually came forward and simply asked one question. "What happens when you turn a baby grand [or any grand for that matter] upside down?
He never thought for a moment that he was fooling ANYONE. He was shocked to find out different.
Buy cape. Wear cape. Fly.
Amazing! Thanks for pointing out that video, China!ChinaPig wrote:Hard to beat Keith Emerson as an all time fave rave. Currently though I'm in love with Hiromi Uehara. Plays a lot like Keith but a lot easier on the eyes.Check it out!

After watching it, though, I wouldn't say that Hiromi plays like Emo. In this piece, her groove–and to some extent her sound–reminds me much more of Chick Corea than Keith.
That said, what a terrific player! She makes it appear easy, while clearly having a great time. Simply awesome!
