351 and 352 expander accessory cable: Ugliest cable ever!!!

Post by shakti » Thu Jan 24, 2008 7:00 am

Why did they have to pick an ugly ass conservative grey cable for the accessory ports? Why not black, or silver, or brown, or even white, but grey??? Ewwww.
Nit picking..I know...

Ooops...busted talking smack about Moog by the "Moogman".
Great minds think alike??
Maybe? :D
Thanks Amos! Not really a big deal,
but aesthetics are a part of moog products
and that cable says ugly all over it.
Is it a standard cable that I could replace?
Thanks for listening...

Now go make that Moog CP252-Enveloper and finish the MF109 Mooger-coder Vocoder

Hey! Don't rush the man, he's too busy working on the affordable polysynth and the sequencer, of corse.

What's wrong with dark grey? Not as good as black, but the cable that came with y Voyager was BEIGE. Yeech.....!

SEQUENCER? SEQUENCER? Are we talking STEP sequencer??? I talked about this to someone at MOOG MUSIC sometime last fall. Whoever I talked to though it was really neat idea... but back drawered it for the time because they were polishing up Little Phatty.

Could it be.... ?

Hello,

I believe Cikira posted up on this some time ago. This thread:

http://www.moogmusic.com/forum/viewtopi ... 9ebc1057b5

Mine was purchased from Montek (IIRC):

There are probably more sources if you need to compare prices.

Lawrence

Yes and they are building a new Modular SYnth too. A Polyphonic Modular Synth with a sequencer, and its all contained in an affordable Moogerfooger style Stomp Box.

Right Amos?

umm... yeah. ;)

As for the cable it is a standard "DB-25" cable, which comes in two varieties, twisted and straight-through... you want the straight variety.

Belkin makes one in classy black for about 12 bucks.

You know after recieving both these units today.. and putting them into the rackmount it looks like it wouldn't be impossible to have cables coming out the back instead. Would require extra holes cut in the rackmount bracket.

It would take a fair bit of dismantling of the front panel of the VX's but it would just be a bit labourious I think...

Basically unscrewing the pots and the 1/4" connectors from the front panel... as far as I can see they are the only thing holding the PCB to it.
Then route the socket round the back instead, plenty of room to do this.

classy black
Yup, so we can safely put the pc-coloured cable in the category "not classy". Does not go well with extremely classy synth gear such as Moog.

Yeah the beige ones are pretty lousy.

I just bought a pair of these, just in case anyone else in the UK is the same aesthetic predicament :)

It was a very simple job taking the PCB out and routing the DB25 ribbon through behind the PCB instead. I'm going to take it all to a local sheet metal shop next week and get the DB25 ports mounted on the back of the 19" Rack with black blanking plates covering the holes on the front. The ribbons are just long enough to do this comfortably.

Aside from the holes cut in the Rackmount it would be simple to put it back in its original form.

Some tips on taking it apart.

Accessory port: Simply unscrew the bolts.

Pots: Take off the knobs and remove the nut and washer. Be aware there are also some washers under the plate.

Jack sockets: Just rotate the plastic top by roughly an eighth of a turn anti-clockwise. I used a pair of pliers with some plastic tape around the end to protect the part, I found I can put them back on afterwards using my fingers.

Will post some photos when it's done.
