Ribbon Controller?

Post by DeFrag » Fri Feb 02, 2007 6:02 pm

I'm in awe of the http://www.hakenaudio.com/Continuum/ & have to wonder is there a cheaper alternative? Can a ribbon controller even work with the Phatty? What are our options?

Hehe ;-)

I just entered the forum to post the same question.

Well, great minds think alike :-)

I was looking at DOEPFER R2M.
It generates MIDI as well as CV...

Anyone knows if it'll work with the Phatty?

this is a little different, but the paia site has schematics for a cv ribbon controller at http://www.paia.com/ProdArticles/dual-ribbon-howto.htm. Has anyone tried it? It would be nice if some company made a relatively cheap cv ribbon controller...maybe moog could fill in the gap?

or use a K2600 as your master keyboard
great for finger vibrato on string sounds

Since I'm fairly naive about these things, I suppose my real questions would be:

1. Can a ribbon controller be plugged into the LP & used instead of the built in keyboard?

2. If so, will it control the Phatty via MIDI or CV?

3. The Kurzweil unit has a connector that looks like an RJ-45, will it work if re-terminated with a phone jack?

4. What about the Haken Audio Continuum or a http://therevox.com/index.php?

I just love this hardware stuff & am reading as much as I can to educate myself. I'd like to take advantage of the smooth transition from note to note such as a continuous glide or portamento as provided by these alternate controllers. I'm just a bit confused if any of them will interface & operate as I assume they will to provide control of the LP in an extensible way.

It would be great to have something like the Continuum, Therevox, or a standard ribbon-controller just underneath the Phatty's keyboard, plugged into at all times so we could take advantage of either controller on a moments notice during performances for whatever type sound we want.

Anyway, tks to those of you speaking up!

A ribbon controller is like any other controller. It sends out signals to control other devices. You can use it on the Little Phatty any way it can send out signal. Take the aforementioned Doepfer ribbon. It can send out both CV/Gate, and midi, so you can plug it into the LP either to the midi in, or send CV to the pitch and Gate to Gate input. Heck, you can plug the CV into the Filter CV and use your ribbon to slide the Cut-Off on the filter.

With the Moog Control Processor, you could plug a homemade ribbon controller into the red powered multi-jack and control the LP (through the LP's CV In jack). Since the CP-251's red jacks are powered, you could build your own passive resistive strip (one that would act similar to how a 100K potentiometer would act) with the power supplied by the Control Processor. I have not done this but theoretically, it works.
I have the Doepfer ribbon controller, I like it. Yes you can use it with the Little Phatty... and the Voyager... and a Roland SH09... or anything else with a 1v/oct CV Input.

I have built a few passive powered ribbon controllers and I've used them to control the Voyager and the carrier signal of the MF-102. It works the same as the EP-1 which if you open it up is just a potentiometer. I don't think you would need the CP-251 to add voltage for controlling the Little Phatty. I have used the ribbon controller with the CP-251 to add voltage to control a Metasonix VCO. That combo is great since Metasonix modules are not v/oct. I've also used the CP-251 ribbon/controller combo to control my Arp Solus and Blacet VCO. I would use the mixer on the CP-251 because you can use the offset for more control. You could also use one of the attenuators.

Here's a picture of it.

I've sold one on ebay and I'm planning on making some more and selling them in April.

Here are some links on the Moog 956 ribbon controller.
