I'm looking for some advice

Post by Dider1950 » Tue Oct 01, 2024 4:02 am

Hi all.
I'm looking for some advice. I have a Moog Prodigy 336A. Cosmetically really nice, only missing one slider, no other real cosmetic issues.
But... I turned it on one day and no sound! :( (It worked fine one day, stayed in tune, played like a dream, then...nothing. Oh the pains of owning a vintage analog.)
Anyway, I have a Little Phatty that I love, and live in an synth tech impoverished area, so there's not much incentive to fix it.
Anyone have a notion of a fair price to ask for a Prodigy that powers up but makes no sound?

I buy it for 10 bucks

No, seriously, my recommendation is to keep it and to repair it. It has a wonderful sound, and the sync is of unique quality in the world.

The circuit is easy to understand and the board is accessible easily. When I bought my Prodigy from the Evil Bay, I had to repair it as well. I located the fault roughly from the Prodigys behavior and made a backtrace analysis from that point to the point on the board where everything was still ok. That way I found the fault quite fast.

According to your description I would start at the output jack going backwards to VCA going to VCF going to OSC 1 and 2. My assumption is that the CA3080 OTA of the VCA has left our world forever. The inputs of the OTA should show audio signals, and if the output is dead replace the OTA.

If no one can help you can send it to me. No pains concerning old analogue synths. They should be kept, restored and used.

After making an approximate diagnosis based on the Prodigy's actions, I traced the problem back to the spot on the board where it was working well.
