MF-104M with analog sequencer

Post by andreib » Thu Sep 14, 2017 4:09 pm

I have an Oberkorn analog sequencer (old red discontinued model) and I'm trying to connect it with the MF-104M delay. My goal is to trigger the delay on individual steps, as opposed to having the whole signal fed through the delay. Ideally, I would need a CV gate on the 104M to trigger the Bypass function on/off on each of the steps and have the delay spill over.

Please let me know if there is a routing possibility to achieve this or if there is a mod available to trigger the bypass with CV.

Thank you! :)

What other gear do you have?

Easiest would involve your gate triggering an envelope generator controlling a VCA (will get clicky otherwise). Run the audio through the VCA into the 104M input.

Or, use a trigger/gate-to-MIDI module, with the MIDI message configured to bypass the MF-104M in spillover mode.

I have the MF-101, MF-105M, Voyager (performer), Vermona Retroverb but no separate VCA module.

You can use the Voyager as a very expensive VCA :)

Run the audio through the external input (switched on) with all other VCOs turned off. Unless you want some filtering, VCF cutoff should be fully open with no resonance, amount = 0. Patch the Oberkorn gate (check if the voltage is compatible) to the Voyager Env. Gate and switch the panel control to On/Ext. Set the Volume envelope 0 attack, 0 decay, full sustain, 0 release. Adjust the attack and release until you're happy with the amount of clicking.

Voyager output goes to the MF-104M. The gate triggers the Voyager EG, and that controls the sound that reaches the 104M.

This lends itself to tweaking: add in some drone VCOs or noise, play with the Voyager filter settings, or run through your MF-101 and you have an envelope follower and another filter of course.

Have fun!

That's quite intuitive, although the Voyager is the only instrument I have that can play with the Oberkorn. I forgot to mention, I also have a CP-251. Let me know if you have other routing ideas. At this point I might consider adding some modules.

IIRC the Voyager's back panel has a PAN CV input. You could use the Oberkorn gate out to modulate the pan and have the left Voyager output going dry and the right one going to the 104M, couldn't you?

Just tried that: the wet signal is constantly present when the gate is turned off and gets amplified on the steps turned on. The gate is not hard panning left or right.

The Pan control expects a bipolar CV of -2.5 to +2.5V (IIRC, RTM). Try patching the sequencer gate through the mixer, with the offset set negative. You can trim the incoming voltage using the 1st or 2nd input and pot if it's not +5V.

If abrupt change is too harsh, patch the output of the mixer via the lag processor and use the rise and fall controls to smooth the transitions.

Maybe connect cv from one row on the oberkorn to the mf104m feedback input? To make it even more precise multiply the signal and connect it to mf104m mix input.

Aye, that’ll do it.

What I do is modulate the ‘mix’ parameter. Not sure what gear you have to do this with. I use an elektron A4. This is one of my favorite techniques.

That won't do the job for the OP. You modulate the volume of wet signal while he wanted to modulate the send to the delay line, i.e. keeping he delay tails in the game even when nothing is sent.

I do this with a bassline and can time the CV to capture the tales. I understand this is not everyone’s situation.
