Sub37, noise at 8 & 16 Khz when USB connected to DAW

Post by msy » Tue Jan 02, 2018 7:46 am

I've got a real issue when using the USB to control the Sub37 via my DAW.
As soon as USB is connected to the Sub37 two tones are created on the Output, at certain frequencies at around -40dB. (If I remember correctly it's exactly at 8 and 16 KHz, so it is two sinewave "overtones" rather than noise.

Of course I have tried changing USB cables, also using an active USB cable.
This does not happen to my other instruments that uses USB also.

It this a known issue? Can it be fixed?

I thought my tinnitus was becoming worse there for a while. Happy that isn't the case. :)

USB and audio are not working good together.

USB is unlike MIDI connecting both ends electrically from one unit to another. And USB is driven by high frequency voltages that might be heard in the low range of our ears. Just like you can here your cellphone communicating by some pulsed noises, although they broadcast well above every audio range of ours.

There are some USB galvanic isolator‎s available to disconnect USB on one side of the cable. Sometimes this helps, sometimes this cause trouble with the data connection. And sometimes it is just a problem that the shield of the USB socket is not connected well to ground.

As you are most likely not the very first one using USB on a Sub37, it is very likely that something is different on you equipment. Or you got very good ears.
keep on turning these Moog knobs

Sequence:
Prodigy * minimoog '79 * Voyager * MF102 * MF103 * MF104z * MP201 * Taurus 3 * Minitaur * Sub Phatty * MF105 * Minimoog 2017+ MUSE * One 16

What Till said ^ You can try a ferrite noise suppressor sleeve like https://www.alliedelec.com/laird-techno ... hMQAvD_BwE

Thanks. Also got an answer from my reseller.

I will try a couple of things, ie put the Sub37 and DAW in the same power outlet group.
