Voyager Slew Rate Mod

Post by MC » Mon Aug 28, 2017 12:27 pm

Last week I was at the Moogworks. I brought my Voyager SE and requested the slew rate mod to be installed while I was there (can't just be "walk-in", you have to request an RMA ahead of time through the Moog website).

Although the Voyager is not currently in production, the slew rate mod is still available.

Result: I like it. It doesn't drastically change the sound - but if you ever heard a vintage Minimoog with the filter wide open, the slew rate mod gets you closer to that high end vintage "sheen". Definitely worth it.

I got my slew rate modification done by Rudi Linhard some years ago. And now the Voyager sounds indeed brighter in the upper end without loosing the bass. So the filter resonance and distortion gets more harmonics to play with. More vintage Minimoog like. But still not a copy of the real iconic Minimoog sound.
Very recommended!

And the Aftertouch modification by Rudi Linhard mad my Voyager the best aftertouch on a Fatar action I ever experienced. And I own and used to own plenty synths with Fatar actions.

Hey Till, what is the purpose of the aftertouch mod?

The original early Voyagers aftertouch was rather behaving on or of. It was impossible to get mid range values or do slow filter modulations by aftertouch.

Moog offered a field installable solution to existing Voyager users to buy and changed the aftertouch response on later produced Voyagers. It helped but was still sending out only a very limited number of values. When I contacted Rudi Linhard, he offered me to buy his solution. And it was worth every penny (actually Euro cent). The aftertouch no sends the full range of values without skipping values. No you can open the filter real smooth by aftertouch. Even playing a melody theremin like by routing aftertouch on pitch is no fine enough to play a simple melody with after some minutes of practise.

NIce, thanks for sharing your experience :)

I must say the slew rate mod attracts me: I have this MG1 at home, whose oscillators are way brighter than the Voyager's when filter is full open. I miss that on the Voyager...
What is the price of it, BTW?

I paid 126 € + 19% german VAT. No shipping costs, as the Voyager was brought to Rudi (2.5 h drive from my place) and picked up at his place by car.
But this was May 2012.

I don't know about the price right now and about postage and handling you may need.

Thanks :)
I'm in France, so it's not out of reach but it would be a 250-300 euros mod, all in all.

Where/what is this? I assume you're not talking Asheville. Also what does the SR mod cost?

I had the slew rate mod done recently at HHB in the uk along with the aftertouch mod and filter glide mod. My Voyager now sounds and feels light years ahead compared to how it was previously. Night and day for me sonically.

I got mine back from Moog today, having had the mod done. HIGHLY recommended. It is not like a completely different instrument, and still sounds like a Voyager....but a little bit more alive, and like a veil has been lifted. I am very glad I had it done.

does anyone have details/schematic of this mod?

I am not willing to ship to Europe, or even Asheville. I do have a great electronics technician I use for all my stuff, I am sure he could do it

thanks!

I'd like to know too. Does anyone have pics of pre and post slew rate mod saw and square?
I've stopped talking now.

also does it only make a difference when the filter is all the way open?

or does it affect the rest of the "sweep" too?

thx!

You can here the difference nearly all the time. When the filter cut offs, the brighter sound will result in more harmonic amplitude above the cutoff point. And the a filter sweep with much resonance will find more higher harmonics to emphase.
Just like a minimoog does sound different to a unmodiefied Voyager, even with the filter closed partly.
Of cause, when you close the filter down too much, there is no real difference. But then we are more into left sine waves anyway.
