Minilogue, Mom, and Ableton Midi Help

Post by moontrills » Wed Sep 14, 2016 4:38 am

Hello fellas,
I'm trying to figure out what midi box(es) I need to purchase to do something relatively simple and I'd like to know if anyone can point me in the right direction.

I'd like to sync the tempo from ableton to my Minilogue and Mother 32 and use a midi keyboard (arturia key step) with the mother 32 also.

Would a simple midi interface with a midi merger going into the mother 32 work? (I'm guessing that would allow Mom to receive midi clock and notes from the key step)

Or is there an interface out there that can do the merging simultaneously and properly?

I have a way of achieving this, but it involves constantly unplugging midi cables from mom, so needless to say, i would like something a little less tedious.

Any advice or guidance would be immensely helpful!

Hy moontrills,

i use Ableton with Push 2, Minilogue, sometimes Electribe and now the Mother 32.
Sorry but I can`t help you at this moment :? ...but perhaps we can share some Experiences with this Setup.

If you are using Ableton, it is quite simple to do multiple MIDI routings to different devices. It sounds like you may want some hardware with multiple MIDI ins and outs. I use the MOTU MicroLite — it has 5 MIDI ins and 5 MIDI outs. (Although you may only need one old-school MIDI out port, as the Minilogue and Key Step can send MIDI via USB ports — just the Mother needs input from a MIDI DIN cable.)

With this setup, you would create two External Instrument MIDI tracks in Ableton, setting one up to send MIDI to—and audio from—the Mother, and the other for the Minilogue. You then want to make sure the MIDI preferences for each are correct ("Sync" on for both, and "Track" also on for the Mother, and probably the Minilogue too, if you are sending it any note data via MIDI.)

You can then setup the routings in each Ableton track: you an set the Mother to only receive MIDI notes from the Key Step, and the Miniloge either not receiving MIDI notes from an input source, or setting what source you want it to receive MIDI notes from. (You can also leave the routings alone, and only activate the Mother's track — if not active, the Minilogue will still receive MIDI sync, but not the notes coming from the Key Step.)

Hope this is helpful! I use Ableton to route various MIDI tracks and hardware keyboards to up to 4 synths simultaneously — once you figure it out, save your setup at a template for quick and easy future uses.

PS: With "Sync" on for the Mother, it will activate the Mother's sequencer every time you hit play in Ableton—this is an annoying issue that is discussed with no solutions on other threads. Advice: if you aren't using the Mother's sequencer, don't bother syncing it, as no other features on the Mother sync to MIDI clock.
