Little Phatty sounds not quite right any more...

Post by Lania » Tue Feb 16, 2016 5:42 pm

What happened? My Little Phatty sounds as if it has a cold. This happened over night.
I also have the Slim Phatty and it sounds as it should.
Can some one check my samples below?

Little Phatty
Slim Phatty

Does someone know this kind of issue?
Both Little Phatty and Slim Phatty used to sound exactly the same.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Sounds as if the "little" patch only has a single OSC or no pulse width modulation, if indeed the patch is setup that way?

Are the patches identical, otherwise?

I had an issue with my Little Phatty Tribute some time after owning it and doing a recalibration took care of it. Confirm the settings to see that indeed it sounds different with the same patch, maybe try a few different 'features' in a patch between the two synths so you can see if you can narrow down which circuit might be misbehaving. If you still can't figure it out, try a calibration; it's time consuming but might just solve something that may have gone sideways.

Thanks for the reply.
I transfered identical patches to the two Patties.
Besides, the Little Phatty sounded as it should the night before!!!
I'd like to try the CALIBRATION but I have no idea how it works...
Before trying that, I'll re install the latest Firmware. It might solve the issue.
I'll post a follow up when done...

I decided not to re install the Firmware. I don't believe that this is the issue.
I started CALIBRATION procedure and it takes indeed forever!!!
New post when done...

No changes after CALIBRATION...
Now what?
New firmware installation does not work because it has already been (successfully) installed.

I'm starting to think that the Slim Phatty sounds a little different than the Little Phatty. If so, I noticed just now!
After all, my LP is 8 years old now and I installed the Stage II upgrade myself. I also changed the front panel because the original one (painted) was getting ugly :(
When I first had the SP, I was amazed how the two Phatties sounded the same. I even adapted a two voice song for them.
Here is the piece. The first synth is the SP. Then the SP and the LP alternate and play together.

Cleanse

Comment if you wish! :)

Hey Lania.

If I were in your shoes, I would try another calibration. I've read sometimes two of them are needed.
Does the Osc2 of the LP still sound? As said before, it seems your LP has only one oscillator up. Try each oscillator alone, then check the waveform modulation works for each of them too. Tell us what!

Nice song BTW :)

Hi,
Yes this you have to try. Then you are sure that both osc are working.

Warm regards Luloop

And yes a nice song I should say.

Thanks for the comments about the song! I appreciate :D
I have other pieces with the Phatties. Let me know if you want to hear!

I indeed tested the two OSC and they work fine.
The thing is that they sound a little less "dirty" as on the SP.
The difference is very subtile but it there. And some presets are more obvious than others.
Anyway, both the LP and the SP sound really good.
The CALIBRATION did help a though (as suggested, I ran it a second time).
I also did the AutoTune on both. It worked wonders! I used to retune every time I worked on another song.
Very annoying... But it's solved now! :)

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Kind regards,
Lania

Nice!
Don't expect them to sound forever strictly identical: they are analogue :)

I know that now!!!
I'm used to digital sample based synths. So when I first had the LP, I didn't know what to do with it... for a very long time.
I think it's fun to use. And they sound as you want them to sound!
