Double Minitaur

Post by jsharpphoto » Sun Nov 08, 2015 7:05 pm

I have two minitaurs. I live a privileged life. I had been playing them side by side. Not anymore.

In progress dry fit.

I recessed the wholes instead of either flush mounting (the way Moog does) or countersinking. Because why not?

Final trimming, sanding and finishing later this week.

Some better photos.

Good jack access.

I built a 4x2 CV patchbay that lives under my CP-251, so other than the initial setup, I don't actually access those jacks.

All done. I realize this whole this entire thread just comes across as bragging. Sorry. Just excited.

Not at all. Fresh ideas are always welcome here.
And gear customization successes (and failures)
are viewed with great interest.

Great work! The wood grain is very attractive. The slope angle is an elegant solution for retaining jack access to both synths.
What I really want to know is how you play them! Do you use one as a lead instrument and the other as bass, or is it a two-headed BASS MONSTER?
Moog stuff: Slim Phatty, Minitaur, Mother-32, Werkstatt x2, MF-103, MF-104M, MF-108M
Running Moog software on Win7 64-bit

TWO HEADED BASS MONSTER. A stereo pair. Each into it's own MF-Drive pedal. And I take the headphone out of each one, into the AUX IN of the other, so they bleed into each other a bit. It sounds thick, yet very articulate, when I want it to be.

I also use them as 2 polychain voices for my sub37. There are a few bugs that prevent the minitaur editor from seeing both of them, which they are apparently working on. But when the stars align, any adjustments I make to the bottom unit (which i consider the "master") are reflected on both, but it doesn't go both ways. So I make global adjustments to the bottom one (reflected on both) and then reach up and adjust oscillator shape or VCO2 tuning on the top one, if it needs it.

Very cool! Do you ever have a problem where the waveform in one Minitaur is out of phase with the other and they cancel each other out?

It hasn't happened yet. I have the option of inverting the phase on one of the channels in Ableton, if that ever happens. But haven't run into that issue yet.

I ended up selling one of the minitaurs, in favor of the new Dreadbox Hades. Now I'll have a little more variety in bass, but one less voice for polychaining. I didn't want to just throw away these double panels, so I freed up some space by absorbing something else.

Curious as to why the CP-251 was mounted on the top. Seems like having it on the bottom would keep cables from getting in the way of the Minitaur's controls. Maybe it's just temporary?

Those panels sure look purdy! :D

Good call. My original plan was to have the cp-251 on bottom, but it was about a half inch to tall and would have cause the panels to not sit flush on the table. Bummer. I didn't want to modify the metal case of the cp to make it shorter, so I just mounted it on top.

I have now sold off both of my minitaurs, to different people. I have these panels sitting here. Message me if you actually have two minitaurs and you can have them for the cost of shipping.
