What will Moog do next?

Post by dmodhotr » Tue Aug 25, 2015 10:04 pm

With several Moog products being discontinued lately (Voyager RME, Slim Phatty, Moogerfoogers) what do you think Moog will do next to blow our minds and take our money? Or what products would you LIKE to see Moog release?

I personally think with the discontinuation of the rack synths that we may see some kind of new rack module based on the Sub37. :o

A rack-based sub37 would be ideal. And if Amos can work his sorcery to make two sub37's polychain in duo mode, that would be amazing. And if the high-low key oscillator priority was split between the two... Madness.

For me, Moog is like Apple computers. I try not to speculate what's coming next, because I know my feeble brain thinks too small. I don't want to box them in. I like to be astonished, surprised, and infatuated with what they come up with. And these two companies rarely disappoint.

You know I have a lot of rack mount synths (counting in my head...18? 20?) and they all end up out of the way, hard to get to, and rarely if ever used. Meanwhile my keyboard synths (which I intented to get rid of in the first place have multiplied....14?) I know different strokes for different folks, but idea of another unused knob laden rack mount was the reason I bought a Voyager and not an RME. To be fair the Slim phatty's are the exception to the rule simply because I bought the Little Phatty first.

I dont know what they'll do next. An Rack mount Sub37 could be an easy project to do, but ultimately does it make sense for 80% of the customers? The modular reissues were monumental enough with all the hand assembly required to build it. Moog has a small work force, with an impressive set of products to date. I'm sure I'll be surprised. BTW what was the last product Robert Moog over saw?
VoyagerEB, Minitaur, LittlePhattyII, 4xSlimPhatty, Sub37, MF[2x101,2x102,103,104M,105,105B,105M,2x107,108M], 3xCP251, XV351, MP201;
2xMother 32, DFAM, Subharmonicon;
System 55 and Minimoog clones with lots of mods.

The Little Phatty I believe. At least that's the last one he worked on.

Now that we have Mother-32 I wonder if there will be any 'children,' in the form of modules to go along with Mother?

Well, no, I don't have it and I'm not planning on getting it. I've spent my allowance for this year. What I should have said was, now that Moog has released Mother- what will follow?

Why choose the name Mother? Seems an odd choice imo, unless it implies something more to follow or that it is a hub for other components.

I am rather hopeful to see a Four voice poly sub 37. A moog Analog keys killer. I had an AK and really loved it but couldn't afford to keep it at the time. So as I save again for an inevitable purchase now based on the Sub 37 and AK, a poly sub 37 would suit me fine.

Whatever Moog does next, I would really like to see them hold on to the analogue board from the voyager, it's Bobs legacy..
Actually.. considering that the XL is sticking about, I think maybe they will reuse the analogue board, but migrate it into a new home with slightly more modern options.
I hope so anyway.

That would be cool too. Speaking of Bob's legacy…

It's easy to wax nostalgic on the Minimoog/Voyager. As new Voyager RME owner I am in awe of how well designed the instrument is for synthesis.
Bob distilled his essence in the Voyager. I get that when I read the manual. Still there are some things that could be updated in comparison to more modern synths.
I really think Moog has done a great job with the Sub 37 as well. Yeah it's not a Voyager but it has a lot of the things that make it a very cool, musically expressive instrument like the Voyager.

if not a full blown new polyphonic synth then why not some black box inside which additional Sub37 voices could be added to build polyphony, all controlled by one original Sub37 ?
