Question concerning modern Moog synths gate voltage...

Post by Stuka » Fri Sep 04, 2015 7:43 am

I've been thinking about adding a CV sequencer to my Moog rig, and have the chance to pick up a new Doepfer MAQ 16/3 at a decent price.
I would be using the sequencer with my Little & Slim Phattys and Minitaur.

Cost aside, my biggest concern is the MAQ uses a gate voltage of 0/+8V, while the Moog gear requires 0/+5V.
Any concern that the higher gate voltage of the MAQ is enough to actually damage the circuitry of the Moog gear?

Thanks!

Randy

You could build a passive attunator. A simple trip to radio shack should take care of it. I just build a bank of passive CV mults with attenuators. I don't know hat the price is on that doepher unit, but you should definitely look at the Arturia Beatstep Pro. I just got mine to sequence a pair of minitaurs. It's awesome. It was an upgrade for me from the Korg SQ-1.

Good point on just using passive attenuators; I need to see if I can work a panel of mults/attenuators into my current gear rack.

Beatstep Pro does look interesting, but I'm pretty much out of room for any gear that can't be rack mounted.

Too much gear!

The Beatstep Pro is 17" long, so you could Velcro it to a 19" rack plate pretty easily

Another thought...

Most CV that operate at 8v is because they are v/hz not v/octave. Unless the MAQ can be changed to output one vs the other, it may not work with all of your moog gear anyways.

Gate voltage question aside, the MAQ should actually work out quite well -
CV outputs are 1V/octave in "note" mode, and it's also a very full-featured, very versatile hardware MIDI sequencer.

Plus it's still got that cool "old school" knobs & lights appearance going for it, which I'll have to admit is part of the appeal to me! 8)

Yeah, much of the classic analog / MIDI gear comes with a steep price tag ~
but it sure is cool!! 8)

I have one, used it with my Little Phatty with no problem, both with MIDI & CV.
