How long with Tribute Edition of Sub 37 be available?

Post by violethour » Thu Jun 25, 2015 10:18 am

Hey all,
I've been saving up to buy a Sub 37 the last three months, by August I should reach my goal! I don't know what future editions will look like but I love the wood panels and styling of the Tribute edition. Does anyone know if Moog plans on continuing to produce the Tribute through the summer? Thanks!

Does anyone recall roughly how long "limited editions" of recently released Moogs remained in production? I suppose that's the best we can do for prognosticating.

I was waiting for a white edition, but I decided I would rather have the intrument to play, than to look at :-) But it is a looker!

The Sub 37 is listed as being In Stock at Sweetwater. I don't think I have ever seen that before so perhaps Moog has finally caught up with back orders. If sales are beginning to slow maybe the non tribute edition or something else will be coming along soon.

Sweetwater had a few in stock about 3 weeks ago but they didn't last long. I doubt sales of the Sub 37 are flagging and the demand has been fully met. I've been waffling on purchasing one for most of the year so far, and got sidetracked by the purchase of a second 104MSD. But it's still on my radar...

the Tribute addition is "Limited"...it seems "Limited to how many we can sell...."

To be fair the Sub 37 has been in production for less than a year.

I don't think Moog should be "blamed" for having a smash hit product.

@c7sus, agree. No sense revamping a model that is selling with a backlog. Unless it's to increase production volume

And I don't know if everyone reads this (below), but there is a charitable aspect to the Tribute model which may appeal to more if they knew of it.
** The Sub 37 Tribute is a limited edition analog synthesizer created in honor of Moog Music founder Dr Robert Moog, his passion for education, and his love of music. For every Sub 37 Tribute sold, Moog Music will donate a portion of the proceeds to Asheville Area School Music.
I like it!

NOTE: I haven't been in the Moog loop long enough to know what triggers a transition in production from a Tribute to any follow on edition; black, white, etc...

how much is "a portion is donated"...has anyone actually asked or found out. it could be 10cents per Sub37 for all we know. no percentage figure or eg "1/4 is donated"?

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's a lot more than 10 cents.

Corporate profits are affected by things like the cost and availability of parts. Remember the MF-104? I imagine Moog's bean-counters use a formula based on the profit margin of each run.

As for 'asking' or 'finding out'..... As a privately owned company we have no rights to see their financials. Unless I woke up in some communist dictatorship or something.

It's really great of them to support musical talent. They've already done so much for the industry.

So let's not piss on their efforts, K?

i hear ya man, but i dont think its unreasonable to ask the question, seeing as a song and dance seems to be made about it. but i was more thinking along these lines because it was suggested in another thread that Moog will not want to keep paying this donation forever so they will certainly not run the "Tribute" edition for too long. but hey if its 10cents per synth , then they could potentially run the Tribute forever and it would become a non-issue....

It's totally a reasonable and legitimate question. I hope it's a meaningful donation percentage, rather than a frugal amount that serves as a marketing bullet point. I suspect it's not the latter, but that's cause I have a positive bias for this company. Transparency would be elucidating and meaningful, though admittedly not a prerequisite.

Perhaps the price of the tribute edition is slightly higher than the non-tribute will be so we are partial contributors. And I'm fine with that, it's for a good cause.
